Jubilee (1978) DVD9 Criterion Collection

The film opens in England 400 years earlier, with Queen Elizabeth I (Jenny Runacre) and her court astrologer and alchemist, John Dee (Richard O'Brien, creator of The Rocky Horror Picture Show), summoning forth the angel Ariel (David Haughton) to show them the future of their great nation. These opening scenes are shot with lush serenity—all green foliage and candlelight—suggesting that Elizabethan England was a golden age, a time of beauty and peacefulness.

This calm past is then violently juxtaposed with Jarman's vision of the chaotic near future, in which England has deteriorated into a state of near-anarchy. In Jarman's England, there is utter chaos in the streets. Policemen do little to maintain law and order and, in fact, sometimes kill people simply for sport. In retaliation, civilians kill them right back. Anarchy and flagrant sexuality are pandemic, and even Westminster Cathedral has been transformed into a nightclub for orgy-fests. Dorset, for its part, has been transformed into a communist state where "gay, homosexuals, and Jews are banned." The rest of England is rampant with cross-dressing punk transvestites, homoerotic encounters, and street gangs. Sadomasochism abounds, involving everything from bondage to menages a trois to orgies among apostles and bishops.

In Stray Dog we find a young police officer in Japans police force commuting in a crowded bus in a middle of a sweltering summer. As he is stepping off the bus he realizes someone on the bus has stolen his pistol and he gives chase after the thief but is unable to catch up to them. Shamed, he returns to his precinct to tender his resignation, fearing the worst now that his gun is in a probable criminals hands. His chief refuses to accept the resignation though and instead sets the young officer (brilliantly played by Toshiro Mifune) the task of finding his gun before it can be used for any crimes. The young officer takes to the streets then, dressing shabbily and walking the poor sections of the city in the hopes of getting some information. As the days stretch on and the heat climbs higher we see the toll all of this is having on the young officer as each step he takes he seems to feel more and more desperate. Things take a dark turn when there is a robbery that was done with a pist ol and it appears it may be the officers. Losing the last of his hope, the officer is assigned to assist an older policeman that knows the streets better and has avenues of query to explore that the young man had no access to. And as the two begin their investigation they begin getting closer and closer to the truth of who has the gun, and why they have it.

2 Days in Paris (2007) DVD9

French photographer Marion (Julie Delpy) and American interior designer Jack (Adam Goldberg) live in New York, but try to revive their sluggish romance with a European holiday. Venice is a disaster when they both go down with gastroenteritis and they stop over in Paris for two days. The city is full of promise, except for Marion's overbearing parents (Marie Pillet, Albert Delpy) who don't speak English, and her various, flirtatious ex-boyfriends who seem to pop up everywhere. Coupled with Jack's conviction that French condoms are too small, their sex life is as dysfunctional as their social life and their relationship.
Against the oddities and misinterpretations in Paris, the two must come to terms with jealousy, sacrifice and the meaning of true love.

Karamako's dream-inspired insistence that BB go to Saudi Arabia to study to become an imam, against the young man's wishes, further complicates the relationship.

Marguerite de la Nuit is filmmaker Claude Autant-Lara's spin on the "Faust" legend. Though updated to 1925, the story of the ageing pedant who sells his soul to Satan in exchange for youth and knowledge is fairly faithful to the Goethe original. The one major alteration is Satan's decision to "go easy" on the long-suffering Marguerite (played by Michele Morgan). His Satanic Majesty is portrayed with a surfeit of wry Gallic charm by Yves Montand.

Peeping Tom (1960) DVD9

Mark Lewis works as a focus puller at a movie studio, moonlights as a pornographic photographer in a room tucked behind a newsstand and spends his free time endlessly watching black and white home movies. Lewis is afflicted with scoptophilia, the morbid desire to gaze. But watching is not enough for Lewis. He finds his greatest satisfaction filming and then murdering a succession of beautiful women with a dagger hidden in his camera's tripod legs.

His first victim is a prostitute, his second a film actress, and his third a model. In the course of these murders, Mark meets Helen Stephens and her blind mother, and the two women rent a flat in his house. One day he shows Helen some film depicting his father's experiments on himself; the film both fascinates and repels Helen. Learning that Mark is the son of the notorious Dr. Lewis, the police put Mark under surveillance. The truth is revealed when Helen accidentally switches on Mark's projector and views the murder of the actress.

Aurora (2010) DVD9

Inside a non-descript apartment kitchen, a man and a woman discuss the inconsistencies in Little Red Riding Hood, their voices hushed, mindful of waking the little girl sleeping in the next room. Behind a line of abandoned trailers, on the outskirts of Bucharest, the same man waits for something or someone to arrive. At a metallurgical factory, he collects two hand-made firing pins secretly prepared by a coworker. The man's name is Viorel. He is 42 years old, divorced, a father of two young girls, and today he will carry out a plan that will bring order to his world.

Romanian filmmaker Cristi Puiu ("The Death of Mr. Lazarescu") is the writer-director of this three-hour experimental crime drama that turns out to be an intriguing philosophical character study of an ordinary man we follow for about one and a half days and try to piece together from the little back story supplied why this supposedly good citizen is driven to commit a premeditated murder of four people in such a cold-blooded manner.

Battle of Britain (1969) DVD9

The movie covers a very specific event in the history of World War II. An event that marked a turning point in the war and one that was incredibly dramatic because of its unbelievably narrow outcome. After NAZI-Germany had managed to conquer most of Europe the next logical and strategic step was to take Britain.
As a prelude, the German Luftwaffe mounts immense flights of fighters and bombers designed to knock out British air bases and destroy the planes of the R.A.F. Fighter Command. The latter is under the general direction of Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding with the front line defenses of 11 Group in southeastern England commanded by Air Vice Marshall Keith Park. As the summer progresses and multiple German attacks arrive every day, many German planes are shot down, but British losses of planes and particularly pilots become critical. Then on September 15, 1940, the Germans launch their largest attack so far.

Whilst working as a ranch hand in Texas John O'Hanlan (James Stewart - The Rare Breed) receives a letter telling him he has inherited some property in Cheyenne following his brother's death. Along with his long time riding budding Harley Sullivan (Henry Fonda - Firecreek), they head to Cheyenne to discover what sort of property it is John now owns. And what a shock John gets when he discovers that the Cheyenne Social Club which he owns is in fact a whore house. As a man of standards John decides to close it down but soon discovers that his decision is not only unpopular with the locals but also ends up getting him into a barrel load of trouble with an angry local and his family.

Agnes de ci de la Varda / Agnes Varda Here and There (2011) 2 x DVD9

This documentary series episodes took place in Paris, Berlin, Sete (the location of her first feature), Nantes and Portugal. Notably we get to rummage around in Chris Marker's atelier, with the man himself (unseen of course) sitting amongst a Gordian knot of cables downloading Al Jazeera TV, updating his virtual reality site, showing off his collection of Time magazines, with the infamous Bin Laden crossed out in red cover with matching versions of Hitler and Japan post Hiroshima. Here the hunter gets captured by the game when Agnes Varda becomes Audio Visual and romps around in Marker's computer game staring at a virtual sea. On to Nantes for a moving celebration of Jacques Demy by family members and Anouk Aimee strolling through Lolaville. Finally to the strains of Amalia Rodriguez we look up Manuel De Oliveira who at 102 seems sprightlier than many half his age. Again quarry turns predator when Manuel pinches Varda's camera and turns it on her while she does a little dance. Due to a lack of expertise with focus pulling Manny manages to create a fetching little pointillist number on Agnes with the raindrops on the lens pin sharp.. We are left with the clip from Angelique of the dead girl's smile and of course, as in her dance, Varda neatly sidesteps back to Marker and La Jetee in a blink of an eye.

After a trip to Berlin, Agnes lingers in the beautiful chaos of the workshop by Chris Marker. She walks in Second Life where the director who "pushes the discretion to secrecy" leads a parallel life. Then she takes the train to Nantes where we "celebrated" the twentieth anniversary of the death of Jacques Demy and fifty years of Lola: flash-mob, moving planes of the face of Anouk Aimee Pommeraye, detour construction sites where naval snort now gigantic marine mechanical and relaxing holiday, the Museum of Fine Arts. In Lieu Unique, which exhibits a current Pierrick Sorin against the grain on a 33-turns or spewing stubbornly on a screen, Agnes Varda pushes to its limits this artist who admits to "make love mariole, but a little depressed mariole". The filmmaker then went to Portugal, where Manuel de Oliveira snatched her camera and improvises a dance, before exploring one of his favorite obsessions: what has happened before and after a photo?

A wanderer, who eventually is revealed as a famed atomic scientist seeking sanctuary in village from an explosively modern world that is searching for him, has found the peace and companionship he craves among the people of Calabuch. And the happy idyl comes to an end when, in making a rocket for the townspeople that wins a competition, his picture is published and he is "discovered."
The story is basically a thin one, but the director and a cast, headed by Edmund Gwenn, as the aged, gentle and happy scientist; Valentina Cortesa, as the local schoolteacher who yearns for love and an escape from the monotonous existence of Calabuch; Franco Fabrizi, as the light of her life and the expert Jack-of-all-trades; Juan Calvo, as a splenetic police chief, and supporting, unbilled, uninhibited village types have injected natural fun into a variety of incidents that continuously crop up along the way.
