Three young war veterans get involved in a murder on the black market in Hanover and fled to the countryside. Only in the village of Mayor Luke they find refuge. Luke takes care of the young men and offers them the opportunity to prove themselves useful by letting them build the much needed bridge for the village.

Way in the twilight is a German drama from 1948. It's about the controversial topic of homelessness and rootlessness in the hard times of postwar Germany. Not only the economic hardship is identified, and the personal stories - the mental deficits of the people, the question of guilt - can be accommodated. This begs the question: How far is how far it can be ordered by the morality in a country shortly after the defeat at the end of a long war?

1910, a French country house in high summer. A well-honoured painter is at the end of his working life. As usual, he invites his son, son's family, and his single daughter to visit him, and in the span of one hot day, Tavernier encompasses not only the happiness and sorrows of family life, but also subtler side-comments on life, art and the relation of one to the other. For the painter has lived through the Impressionist revolution, but preferred to hoe his own quiet furrow, away from what he admired but could not connect with. The statement is brave, for it aligns with Tavernier's own position as the leader of the mainstream in France. A mention of Renoir is no accident: the film once more returns to the solid decency and the hedonism of both Renoir pere (painter) and fils (film-maker). Tavernier still shoots in a fluid transatlantic/classic style, but his forte is those fleeting moments that are happy until destroyed by reflection.

Darwin’s Nightmare (2004) DVD9 + DVDRip

Slavery, colonization, genocide and civil war have marked the history of Africa. In Hubert Sauper's powerful documentary Darwin's Nightmare, we witness the latest humiliation -- globalization, euphemistically called the New World Order. Darwin's Nightmare is about fish, specifically the Nile Perch in Tanzania's Lake Victoria, but the theme is the exploitation of the natural resources of one country for the benefit of others. In this case, 500 tons of white fillets are caught each day, then exported to Europe to feed two million people each day while the villagers who cannot afford the perch are forced to live on the heads and carcasses that the factories have discarded. While the film is about fish, Sauper explains that he "could make the same kind of movie in Sierra Leone, only the fish would be diamonds, in Honduras, bananas, and in Libya, Nigeria or Angola, crude oil".

Because of over fishing, the Nile Perch was artificially introduced into Lake Victoria in the late 1950s but it was an experiment gone wrong. The Nile Perch became the lake's predator, destroying the existing species of fish, even devouring its young, and devastating the natural ecology of the lake. With the collapse of a stable economy, local fisherman and farmers became dependent on the export business and the result was famine, poverty, HIV, prostitution, and drug addiction. The director says, "It is so incredible that wherever prime raw material is discovered, systematically the locals die in misery, their sons become soldiers and their daughters are turned into servants and whores".

Even after they join together, their lives are complicated by her difficult children, Maurice (Adam Woronowicz) and Solange (Bozena Stachura), and not least of all, by Chopin's galloping consumption that sentences him to an early death.

French writer-director Rene Clement directs this rousing reconstruction of the resistance work in France during World War II. It's a quasi-documentary based on stories told to co-writer Colette Autry by members of the Resistance. It uses non-professional actors--some real resistance fighters and some railway workers, and uses the actual locations to detail how the Breton railroad workers along with the French Resistance practiced sabotage of the railway link between the Occupied and Free Zones (derailing and damaging train equipment so the trains couldn't bring equipment and soldiers to the front lines). It was classified as a neo-realist film and the first film made about the French Resistance (using the same form as Roberto Rossellini's 1940 Open City), and acts as a morale-booster for the French citizens and as a well-deserved homage to the resistance efforts of the French railway workers.

Seppuku / Harakiri (1962) DVD9 + DVD5 Criterion Collection

The movie starts in the earlier part of the Tokugawa Era where peace reigned and the samurai class has disposed mainly of its martial status. The sword is used no more in battle, and many of its rituals are made light. Hara-kiri, or seppuku, is not an exception. It has turned into a farce where one does not even touch one's self with a dagger; one can just reach for the weapon and the honorable second would swiftly be-head the dishonored. It is in this social atmosphere we find our protagonist, Hanshiro Tsugumo. He enters the screen with a heavy presence, dressed in black. He requests to the chamberlain of the Iyi family to let him use their ground to commit seppuku, for he cannot bear living as a destitute ronin (literally meaning, "wave-rider" - a former samurai without a master). The chamberlain listens to his request, and proceeds to tell a story of a different ronin with the same request, with a gruesome outcome. The chamberlain tests Tsugumo's resolve and honor again a! nd again, for he does not want the same situation to repeat itself in his clan grounds. Tsugumo gives a simple answer, telling him that he has nothing in life to hold on to and he is resolved to commit seppuku.
