Harold Lloyd Collection (2002) 9 x DVD9

Harold Lloyd was one of the great comic stars of the cinema, a genius on a par with Chaplin and Keaton. Born in Burchard, Nebraska, on April 20, 1893 Lloyd was acting at an early age with theatrical repertory companies. He made his film debut as an extra in a 1913 one-reel film for the Edison Film Company. He became friends with another extra, Hal Roach, and when Roach formed his own film company, he invited Lloyd to join him.
Lloyd's initial comic characterization was a tramp character called Willie Work. After a series of partings over money and subsequent reconciliations, Roach and Lloyd created a new character, called Lonesome Luke, which became popular, despite Lloyd's dislike of imitating Charlie Chaplin, which the film distributor, Pathe, demanded.
Then Lloyd found the idea that was to become his trademark, and change him from a good comedian to a major star: the glasses. Lloyd persuaded Roach and his distributor to abandon Lonesome Luke and in 1917 Lloyd shed grotesque comedy clothes and characterizations for a pair of horn-rimmed glasses. In doing so, Lloyd created an American archetype, an optimistic and determined go-getter sporting spectacles and a toothy smile.
Lloyd retained the "Glass Character" (as Lloyd called his comic persona) throughout the rest of his motion picture career, which spanned 34 years and over 200 comedies. Among his most famous films are Grandma's Boy (1922), Safety Last! (1923), The Freshman (1925), The Kid Brother (1927), Speedy (1928), and Movie Crazy (1932), all included here amongst many other gems in this most comprehensive of collections.

Beatrice Fairfax (1916) 3 x DVD5

In 1898 a young reporter for the New York Evening Journal started the first modern advice-to-the-lovelorn column which she called "Advice to the Lovelorn." Her name was Marie Manning but she took the "nom de plume" of Beatrice Fairfax. She kept it up until her death in the 1940's.

Her column was so successful that by 1916 the newspaper she worked at decided to produce a serial for the movies based on her exploits. This was the early years of the serial and the cliff hanger endings had not been invented yet. So each episode was in fact a small adventure film of about a half hour, each complete in itself. At this time serials were intended for adults not children. There were 15 episodes.

The discs contain all episodes (including an audio re-creation of the lost Episode 1).
Includes all the restored and newly scored episodes, plus a mini-documentary about the real-life Beatrice Fairfax and her column as well as the fictional character's history, and extras such as stills and memorabilia on Disk 1.
Commentary by Ithaca film historian Terry Harbin is included on alternate soundtracks for Episodes 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Spider (2002) DVD9

Spider is Dennis Cleg, a man whom we learn is being reintegrated into society after many years in a hospital for the mentally unwell. Arriving at a halfway house, he is soon surrounded by the noises and confusion of others of his kind and even makes some acquaintances. However, all is not well with Spider and in the ongoing days his memories of growing up in the same neighbourhood as the halfway house come back more and more heavily.

We see Clegg revisit his past as an onlooker, standing in the background as he watches his younger self and his parents, played by Gabriel Byrne and Miranda Richardson, go through the horrifying events that led to the fracture of his psyche. The long-suffering mother bonds with her only son, whom she nicknames Spider, while the angry alcoholic father cheats on her with a vulgar whore he picks up in a pub.

Soon it is apparent that not all of Spider's memories are true, nor are they clear and precise and finally we learn of the awful reason why Spider was in a mental institution in the first place.

Yui (Miako Tadano) and Shinji (Takumi Tanji) are young live-in lovers who work part-time at a neighborhood video store. But the store's middle-aged manager, Okamura (Shinya Tsukamoto) has a crush on Yui, which he confesses one day while getting ready for a staff barbecue. Also, that evening Shinji tells the manager he has been cheating on Yui -- and begs him not to tell her.
Then, one startling jump-cut later, Shinji is on the floor, his head in the middle of a spreading pool of blood and Okamura is standing over him, with a disquieting look of satisfaction on his face. Is it an accident -- or murder? Bed of Roses (1933) DVD5

Lorry Evans (Constance Bennett) and Minnie (Pert Kelton) are released from prison in Louisiana after six months. A priest suggests a governess job to Lorry, but she rejects it. Lorry and Minnie take a steamboat but don't have enough money to get to New Orleans. So Lorry gets a man drunk and takes $60 from him. When he calls the police, she jumps overboard. She is pulled aboard a barge, realizes she lost the money, and pushes Dan (Joel McCrea) in the river. He gives Lorry a catfish dinner and his bed; but she takes his cash too and leaves.
Lorry in glasses interviews publisher Stephen Paige (John Halliday) for a newspaper, finding out his views on Prohibition. She asks for a drink for her heart trouble and takes him drunk to his home, where he passes out on the couch. In the morning Stephen finds Lorry there. He tries to get rid of her, but she threatens to kill herself. So he sets her up in a nice apartment...
