Created in 1933 out of the ashes of the Empire Marketing Board Film Unit, the GPO Film Unit was one of the most remarkable creative institutions that Britain has produced. A hotbed of creative energy and talent, it provided a spring board to many of the best-known and critically acclaimed figures in the British Documentary Movement, including John Grierson, Alberto Cavalcanti, Humphrey Jennings, Basil Wright, Harry Watt, Edgar Anstey and Arthur Elton, alongside innovators and experimentalists such as Len Lye and Norman McLaren. Their work embraced, public information drama-documentary, social reportage, animation, advertising and many points in between. The BFI National Archive, in partnership with the British Postal Heritage Museum, Royal Mail and British Telecom, has preserved and curated the legendary output of short films produced by the GPO Film Unit.

This, the second of three volumes, covers the period 1936-1938 and represents the GPO Film Unit at its creative height - including much-loved classics such as Night Mail, the experimental animations of Len Lye and Norman McLaren, and Harry Watts' first forays into drama-documentary with 'The Saving of Bill Blewitt' and 'North Sea' as well as other neglected works, many of which will be available for the first time since their original release.

The film is based on the works by Russian writer Anton Chekhov. This is a picture of life of the Russian gentry in the late 19th century. Without a grain of sentimentality, the director reveals the moral bankruptcy of his heroes. A village teacher, Platonov, is undergoing an emotional crisis. He believes his life has had no purpose. He is tormenting both himself and his young wife, Sashenka. The film's another protagonist – Doctor Terletsky – hates his patients and his work. The guests staying with a general's wife, Anna Petrovna, are talking about the pleasures of a simple village life, not really believing what they are saying. The retro style chosen by the director and the masterly cinematography (a credit to Nikita Mikhalkov's permanent cameraman – Pavel Lebeshev) combine to make this film a real treasure for the lovers of Russian classics. Played in the film is the music by G. Donizetti, F. Liszt, S. Rachmaninov.

In the end, the investigator discovers that the responsibility for the disaster lies with a series of people, officials and others, who made significant errors that added up to a fatality. The question is in the end, whose story will see the light of day -- the investigator's or the journalist's? This was Anatoli Solonitsin's last film, as the actor died of cancer in June of 1982. He was the favorite actor of the critically-acclaimed director Andrei Tarkovsky, who had been hoping to cast Solonitsin in his next work, Nostalghia.

A Midnight Clear (1992) DVD9

In this screen adaptation of William Wharton's 1982 novel, writer and director Keith Gordon reveals war to be a dirty trickster. Knott (Ethan Hawke), the youthful narrator, leads his five-man intelligence unit into the Ardennes forest in December 1944. They have orders to set up an observation post in a deserted chateau. To insulate themselves against the insanity of combat, they have created a family with a "Father" (Frank Whaley), a former seminarian, and a "Mother" (Gary Sinise), a worrier they try to protect from further battle fatigue. They have games to keep themselves occupied as well as a "no obscenity" rule.
Much to the family's surprise, the German soldiers in the area have also lost their zest for fighting. They throw snowballs at the Americans rather than grenades and at Christmas sing carols in front of a decorated tree. They even have a plan that will enable them to surrender with dignity.
Unfortunately, things don't go as planned.

Perhaps more than any other director, Louis Malle is ripe for a critical reassessment. His films and career have been criminally underrated by the French because he's an oddball. As a filmmaker, Malle existed in two worlds: one of French independence, the other of American gloss. A postwar director who doesn't belong to the school of the New Wave, Malle had the audacity to cross the Atlantic and find success in Hollywood with films like Pretty Baby, Atlantic City, Damage, and Vanya on 42nd Street. Yet he also made films like Zazie dans le Metro, The Thief, May Fools, and the three pictures included in this boxed set, all vibrant with the independent spirit of French cinema. Malle and his work aren't easily categorized.

Few directors have portrayed the agonies and epiphanies of growing up as poetically – and scandalously – as Louis Malle.
