Sucre amer / Bitter Sugar (1998) DVD5

In Sucre amer Christian Lara of Guadeloupe uses a trial to raise the question as to the right of enslaved persons to defend their personhood and their liberty, specifically, as agents for revolutionary change. Although ostensibly an appeal trial to clear the name of Major Joseph Ignace (actor Jean-Michel Martial), a Guadeloupean commander in the French army who after fighting royalists in the island on behalf of the French Republic, found himself and his armies in rebellion against Napoleon's army sent to re-institute slavery in Haiti and Guadeloupe, the trial actually serves to reveal the hypocrisy of Western bourgeois democracy in its inability or unwillingness to resolve the contradiction between a discourse of liberty, equality and fraternity, and the practice of slavery and colonialism vis-a-vis Africans present in France and the French colonies in the Caribbean.
The film contrasts the high ideals of liberty and equality expressed by the French Revolution and Napoleon, with the horrible reality of slavery. This is a subject that applies to the United States as well, a country whose democratic ideals were in direct conflict with its use of slavery throughout its first eighty years.

Mother India / Bharat Mata (1957) DVD9

Above all a story about honour, Mother India opens with a close up of 'village mother' Radha (Nargis). Her weather-beaten features setting the tone for much of what is to come, she is immediately recognisable as a woman forged by suffering and it soon becomes clear that it is her story that Khan intends to relay.

Flashback to the days of Radha's youth... Happily married, Radha and her husband (Raaj Kumar) toil the earth in an effort to produce enough crop to feed their family and pay back the money they owe to an unscrupulous moneylender (Kanhaiyalal). Times prove hard, but the family prevail. Soon they have enough to raise a small family and buy enough oxen to plough the land. But tragedy soon strikes when early rains destroy the villager's harvest and force the family to sell what little valuables they own to the moneylender.

The family proves strong and Radha encourages her husband to try twice as hard to make a comeback. But when a second tragedy strikes, leaving her husband horribly maimed and unable to work, Radha is left to raise her children alone, under the continual threat of starvation and the fear of sexual advances from the slimy moneylender.

Years go by and we find that whilst one of her sons has become a hard working, respected farmer, another has become the village idiot, bitter with rage and committed to vengeance. Radha, caught between her rebel son and the survival of a community she has been instrumental in building, is faced with a decision that forces her to choose honour over blood.

Guerilla Blues and Holy Ghosts: A Grammar of Black Suffering, Absence of Presence, and Other Reflections on Dead Weight (2012) DVD5

"Guerilla Blues and Holy Ghosts" is an experimental documentary directed by Aryan Kaganof that features a compelling portrait of Gylan Kain, one of the founders of "The Last Poets," the Harlem spoken-word group established in 1968 which is said to be a precursor to hip-hop.

The Last Poets, an African American cultural group, formed on the anniversary of Malcom X's birthday, May 19, 1968 in Harlem, N.Y. Their works are considered a precursor to hip-hop. One of their founding members was Kain. This documentary interweaves scenes with Kain reminiscing, reciting some of his works and talking about his relationship with God, and some dramatic pieces.

"Guerilla Blues and Holy Ghosts" is notable for featuring footage from Kaganof's 'lost' feature "The Turner Revelation" (1995), which stars and is based on a play Kain. The documentary also incorporates footage from Kaganof's Georges Bataille adaptation "The Dead Man 2: Return of the Dead Man" (1994).

During the Great Depression, Hollywood offered two primary forms of escapism for the poor and weary: propulsive crime dramas and glamorous fantasies about the rich and star-crossed. A few movies blended both genres, though none as successfully as MGM's hit series about Nick and Nora Charles. Dashiell Hammett's final novel, The Thin Man, introduced them as an oddball couple: he a hard-drinking but natty former cop and brilliant celebrity detective, and she as his pampered but game society bride, fascinated with his work and perpetually trying to get involved. The 1934 screen adaptation The Thin Man was the first of William Powell and Myrna Loy's six Nick and Nora films, all of which are gathered in the seven-disc box set The Complete Thin Man Collection. The filmmaking teams and the tone changed over 13 years, but Powell and Loy's light, witty, unflappable characterizations became the unwavering backbone of a terrific series.

William Powell and Myrna Loy were one of the smartest and sexiest on-screen couples of the '30s and '40s as Nick and Nora Charles, martini-sipping socialites who solved crimes in their spare time in The Thin Man and its sequels, and this special DVD box set collects all six movies in the series. Also includes a bonus disc, Alias Nick and Nora, collecting two insightful documentaries about the films' delightful stars.

"Leviathan" is a modern day retelling of the Biblical story of Job set in contemporary Russia. Kolya lives in a small town near the Barents Sea, in North Russia. He has his own auto-repair shop. Vadim Sergeyich, the Mayor of the town, wants to take away his business, his house and his land. To Vadim, the land represents the perfect piece of seaside real estate for future development, but to Kolya, it's his ancestral home. It represents freedom - man's sole true possession.
First the Mayor tries buying off Kolya but Kolya isn't interested in money, he doesn't want to lose everything he has: not only the land, but also all the beauty that has surrounded him from the day of his birth. As Vadim Sergeyich starts being more aggressive, Kolya asks his best friend Dmitri, a lawyer from Moscow, to help him, unaware that this would change his life forever.
