The New Babylon is a Russian silent film, made in 1929, centred on the events related to the rise and brutal suppression of the 1871 Paris Commune.  As the Germanic Prussian army defeated the French army and advanced to conquer Paris, the rich in the city went on with their escapist lives without caring to protect the city. On the other hand, the working class of the city refused to capitulate and set up a Paris Commune to protect the city from the Prussian army. The Paris Commune achieved its primary aim of protecting the city but was in turn crushed by the French Government. Thousands of members of the Paris commune were killed by the French Government instead of being grateful to the brave hearts.
It was not strictly the commune's historical reality that inspired Kozintsev and Trauberg. It was the movement's symbolic re-invention of "The City of Light" — an attempt at the creation of a universal socialistic "Paris of the Mind" that the two Soviet artists found most intriguing.

Meanwhile, men and women take to the hills to form partisan militias. The full brutality of the Nazis is revealed when a German doctor (Erich von Stroheim) uses the village children as a source of blood for transfusions into wounded German soldiers. Some children lose so much blood that they die. A famous Russian doctor (Walter Huston) discovers this and informs the partisans, who prepare to strike back....

SOS Pacific (1959) DVD5

During a thunderstorm a sea plane is forced to make an emergency landing on the water near an island, aboard are a policeman, Petersen (Clifford Evans) and his prisoner Mark (Eddie Constantine) as well as the uneasy Whitey (Richard Attenborough) a witness to his crimes and a variety of other passengers. With the pilot having died due to an extinguisher filling the cock pit with a toxic gas the remaining survivors make it to the island on the planes emergency rafts where upon they see the island is surrounded by derelict boats. They also discover two concrete bunkers; one containing goats the other containing camera equipment focussed on a nearby island. As they look at what the cameras are trained on they get a shock as they realise they are stranded in an H-Bomb testing zone and have only a few hours to find a way to either stop the test or get to safety.

The Raramuri or Tarahumara live in the mountains of Chihuahua and Durango. They are the largest group of pure Indians in Mexico. Their language is of the Uto-Aztec family. They are farmers, shepherds and hunter-gatherers. In winter they retire to houses and caves in the deepest canyons. In spring they move to the Sierra. They celebrate this event with the Teshuinada to start the farming year. This film was made in the Holy Week of 1979 in Munerachi, a town in Batopilas, Chihuahua.

Poetas campesinos:
This film was made in San Felipe Otlaltepec in the Mixtec region of Puebla, an area with an important artistic tradition. The protagonists are Popoloca peasants who have preserved their dialect to this day.

Soviet film Director film Studio "Soyuzmultfilm", writer, animator and Director. He took the famous Moldavian fairy tale "the Nut twig" and the hilarious, witty film "the Boy from Naples" and "How mushrooms with peas fought", created a series of paintings on the epic about Ilya of Murom and filmed a number of Russian fairy tales. He was verbose, explained its Director's intentions quite florid. Once they heard the explanation of the multiplier got up and said grimly: "Amsterdam!" At some time it became the nickname of Aksenchuk.

The last great fairytale animation film maker in the classic soyuzmultfilm tradition, but also a great lover of the humoristic-satirical genre and later in his carreer epic-lyrical animations IVAN AKSENCHUK presented in a 4 DVD series of his complete work. His animation-career ran from 1948-1988.

Le soldatesse / The Camp Followers (1965) DVD9

This almost Dreyer-like deeply poetic film about 'faces' is one of the most brilliant of the '60s and one of the most inexplicably neglected and forgotten.

At the center of the story is the armed transport of a fleet of women, prostitutes because of the poverty with which war has afflicted them, in order to service Italian soldiers in brothels in the 1940s during World War II. The action begins in Athens, Greece, and proceeds north. The truck ride is over treacherous mountain terrain, and the whole ordeal evolves into a metaphor for war. Meanwhile, the transport itself becomes embroiled in war's shell fire, killing some of the women and shattering the souls of the survivors.

Zurlini's film is also about the interaction amongst the three soldiers in charge of the transport and between them and (to begin with) the fifteen women. There are, in effect, two main characters, one from each group. Lieutenant Gaetano Martino is one protagonist; Eftichia, the most brooding and miserable of the prostitutes, the other.

Experimental animation is a broad notion that can be applied to many genres of animated film that break with formal and narrative conventions.
The present anthology is a selection of some forty productions that do not quite fit into the mainstream of film animation. On the three discs the viewer will find abstract films, films composed of photographic images subjected to manipulation, as well as animations drawn in unconventional fashion. Some of these are works by well-known artists from beyond the cinematic milieu - writer Stefan Themerson and his painter wife Franciszka, for example, the designer Andrzej Pawlowski, or the photographer Tomek Sikora. "Aenigma" opens with a prologue, in which a couple of eeevil students at a college for girls, plus their boyfriends, play a prank on a poor girl they bully. They dress her up and hook her up with a hunk, only to later make fun of her. The bullied girl runs off, is hit by a car and ends up brain dead in a hospital.

A couple of months later, and new student, Eva Gordon (the gorgeous Lara Lamberti from Lamberto Bava's "A Blade in the Dark") arrives to the school -- and things very soon become weird and horrifying. The students responsible for the accident end up dead in the most bizarre ways: they have visions of being killed in different, creative ways. A gym teacher's reflection in a mirror comes out and strangles him, a sculpture comes alive and kills a girl, and so on. The causes of death seem natural, there's no evidence of violence, it seems like the gym teacher had a heart attack.

The love quickly turns into a real obsession, culminating in extreme actions and dangerous circumstances.

While project leader Lieutenant Colonel Manley (Richard Shannon) and chief scientist Dr. Wahrman (Raymond Bailey) are anxiously counting down to launch day, Bud and Ken and the children of other scientists working on the project, including cheerful Edie (Sandy Descher), troubled Tim (Johnny Washbrook) and tykes Buster, George and Helen, stumble across a cave containing a glowing alien brain. The space creature forges a psychic link with its new young friends, enlisting them to sabotage the rocket project that their dads are working on! The third and final volume of these incredible travel shorts explores pre-war New Orleans, post-war West Germany, and everywhere in between. Discover the world at that particularly catastrophic moment in history, and the effects it had all over the globe.

The three disc set literally goes all over the map, even from film-to-film. If you sit down to watch several shorts in one sitting, you can go from Brazil and New Zealand to the Andes and the Taj Mahal within an hour. In a world where jet set travel had not yet reached its peak, and focus was on World War II and postwar recovery, seeing places like these before the nightly matinee must have been stunning.
Today the films still impress, though more for the efficient time capsule they provide. The Traveltalks recall life at a slower pace. There are fewer cars and people, and you can even see that the cities have cleaner, clearer air. Overviews of big cities like Chicago and New York are juxtaposed with scenic shots of National Parks and natural wonders, the urban spots in particular almost appearing to be from another world because of the distance of time.
