Smiles of a Summer Night is one of the all-time great romantic comedies.
In a turn-of-the-century Swedish small town, middle-aged attorney Fredrik Egerman (Gunnar Bjornstrand) is married to a 19-year-old woman, Anne (Ulla Jacobsson). Also living with the couple is Fredrik's son Henrik (Bjorn Bjelfvenstam) who is the direct opposite of his father – a very earnest young man, studying to become a priest, Henrik has no experience with women... but certainly desires them, as Petra (Harriet Andersson), a lustful household maid discovers. At the same time, Anne can't help feeling attracted to Henrik – and envious of a much-admired stage actress called Desiree Armfeldt (Eva Dahlbeck) whom Fredrik once had a passionate affair with. Desiree has suddenly reemerged in his life... but as Fredrik soon learns things change over the years. Not only does Desiree have a small child, but also a lover who is not easily dismissed.

A minimum of 90,000 prisoners were murdered between August 1938 and May 1945 in the Mauthausen Concentration Camp or one of its subcamps, or died immediately after liberation from the consequences of their detention.

In 2002, the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, responsible for the Mauthausen Memorial site, commissioned an international project for the worldwide recording of interviews with survivors of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp and its satellite camps.

The Mauthausen Survivors Documentation Project intends to preserve the testimonies and memories of victims of Nazi persecution, as a reminder for future generations and as historic evidence. Furthermore, the recorded interviews and collected artifacts will become the core of a new educational and archival center at the Mauthausen Memorial.

In 2003, the Mauthausen Survivors Documentation Project, conducted life history interviews with about 1000 survivors of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp. The diversity of the Mauthausen prisoner population, their nationalities, ages, categories, periods of imprisonment, and gender are reflected in the interviews conducted with survivors now living in Austria, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Macedonia, the Netherlands, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, the USA, and Ex-Yugoslavia.

3 Classic Films by Claude Chabrol: Betty (1992), L’enfer / Torment (1994), Rien ne va plus / The Swindle (1997) 3 x Blu-Ray

Claude Chabrol seemed to be an icon to the French. His films weaved simple stories with such grace and complexity in the core, that you could not turn away. A director who worked in the realm of realism and also incorporated a psychology and suspense that was rarely seen. He drew inspiration from events that shaped him as a young man, and it showed in films.

Claude Chabrol is without a doubt one of the most prolific auteurs to come from the French New Wave and has been often referred to as "the French Hitchcock" due to his tendency towards thrillers exposing mankind's innate duality. There is usually a dark side lurking just beneath the surface of even his most likable characters.

However, this label ignores some fundamental differences between Chabrol and Hitchcock. The most obvious (and perhaps the most important) of the differences lies in their approach to similar material.

Hitchcock's thrillers focus on placing the audiences in the mindset of his various characters, and a subjective presentation always ruled the day. Chabrol, on the other hand, seems to have preferred a more objective approach to his material.

French filmmaker Jerome Reybaud's feature debut stars Pascal Cervo as a gay man on a road trip through rural France.

Without any explanation, thirtysomething Pierre (Pascal Cervo) takes one last look at the sleeping Paul (Arthur Igual) in their Paris apartment and then hits the road in his white Alfa Romeo. He's got no clear destination in mind, instead moving from A to B using the addresses of people he's connected with on Grindr or indications for potential gay cruising places he's found on the internet. The only thing that is clear is that the clean-shaven man is slowly heading south and that he's a fan of these random and mostly anonymous encounters.
Paul decides in turn to hire a car and track him down.

The show revolves around a brilliant surgeon from London, Dr. Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes), who suddenly develops a morbid and crippling aversion to the sight of blood. With his surgical career abruptly halted, Dr. Ellingham takes a position as local GP (or "general practitioner") in the fictional resort town of Portwenn, where he hopes that the slower pace and peaceful surroundings will help him overcome his psychological issues.

What the doctor hasn't counted on is how ill-suited he is to small town life (or possibly just life in general). Martin Ellingham is a true misanthrope: formal, business-like, abrupt to the point of rudeness, utterly uninterested in small talk and certain that he's smarter than everyone around him (which he usually is). He can barely tolerate his neighbors, his patients and every person he encounters on the narrow, winding streets of Portwenn. For their part, the townspeople, most of them characters in their own right, find their new GP insufferable. Nobody expects "Doc Martin", as the locals insist on calling him, to last more than a few weeks.

Not too far from Canal Saint-Martin, in a district of Paris known for its affordable cafes, you will find Hotel Du Nord. Tonight Pierre (Jean-Pierre Aumont) and Renee (Annabella) have decided to rent a room in this friendly building and commit a suicide. But when the crucial moment arrives Pierre fails to do what he has promised. He leaves Renee in a puddle of blood and runs away.

Unconscious Renee is taken to a nearby hospital where she will soon recover. In the meantime Pierre is captured by the French police and thrown into one of the city's overcrowded jails. As Renee's wounds slowly begin to heal she attempts to reconnect with her past. Surprisingly Renee heads back to Hotel Du Nord looking for a job.

Directed by one of the great masters of French cinema Marcel Carne who filmed the legendary Les Enfants du Paradis (1945) Hotel du Nord is very much a story about doomed love.

Phenomena manages to horrify without throwing up over-the-top gore as with his most memorable outings. Still, it's a graphic movie, and one of his darkest. Jennifer Corvino, daughter of an American film star, arrives in Switzerland in the area known as 'The Swiss Transylvania' to attend the Richard Wagner School for Girls. She arrives at the same time as a killer starts stalking the girls at the school. She is befriended by the wheelchair-ridden Scottish entomologist John MacGregor who discovers that Jennifer has an ability to telepathically communicate with insects. As she explores her newfound ability, Jennifer realises that this also offers a means of discovering the killer's identity.

Watching him as he combs over the area that once served as his prison and listening as he recollects the details of the camp, one gets a true appreciation of the impact that Simon's ordeal has had on his mindset. In Shoah, a nine-and-a-half hour opus that focuses on history without using any archival footage at all, it's the world of memory and personal experience that effectively describe to us the infamous massacres of the past. Primarily concentrating on extermination process at Sobibor, Treblinka, and Auschwitz, the film is undeniably tough going, but by looking into the hearts of the people that experienced the atrocities, it gets at the heart of the horror itself.

Unless you were watching Twin Peaks when it first went on the air back in April of 1990, it may be difficult to appreciate both how radically different and phenomenally popular it was. Twin Peaks is arguably the most influential television series of the last few decades but even so, there still isn't anything quite like it on network TV. Back then, it was like a seismic rift had opened. The show looked, sounded and felt unlike anything that had been seen previously.

On the most superficial level, 'Twin Peaks' was a captivating murder mystery that kept the entire world guessing "Who killed Laura Palmer?" for most of a year. Much like director David Lynch's 'Blue Velvet', the characters' attempt to find a killer causes them to uncover many dark, disturbing secrets about their small American town and about each other. However, that crime story was just the lure to drag viewers into the bizarre world created by Lynch and veteran television writer Mark Frost. Once there, the series became many other things: a fantasy, a soap opera, a supernatural thriller, a teenage melodrama, an offbeat comedy, and a devastating portrait of the dark underside of American society. It managed to be all of these things at once, without contradiction, woven up into a tightly structured narrative that demanded strict attention from its audience.

Ben (1972) DVD9 and Blu-Ray Shout! Factory

Ben (1972), the sequel to the rat-revenger Willard (1971), picks-up right where the first left off, with a recap of the last few minutes of the first film, with lead rat Ben commanding his horde of rats to kill the treacherous human Willard. The cops have arrived on the scene and are investigating the strange death of Willard Styles, lead by detective Cliff Kirtland (Joseph Campanella). The case proves hard for him to wrap his head around, but they find Willard's diary which sheds some light on the events leading up to his murder, but it still seems impossible to think that a horde of rats are killing people. It becomes easier to believe when a cop left behind to guard the crime scene is attacked and killed by Ben and his vermin-horde, who the unfortunate cop found hiding within the walls.

Ben soon makes a new friend, an eight-year old boy with a heart condition named Danny (Lee Montgomery) who lives in the neighborhood. He lives with his mom and his protective sister Eve. Because of his heart condition Danny keeps mostly to himself without any friends, playing with his marionette dolls out on the garage, which is where he first encounters Ben. He and the rat become fast friends, and much like with Willard, the two begin to communicate with each other, and soon Ben introduces Danny to his own family, a horde of rats living in the sewers below the city...
