Cat Ballou (1965) Blu-Ray Twilight Time Limited Edition

Although Cat Ballou was categorized as a Western (a Western comedy to be exact), the film was actually a pastiche of popular Western themes. Screenwriters Walter Newman and Frank R. Pierson and film director Elliot Silverstein took familiar motifs such as shootouts, train robberies, posses in pursuit, and frontier romance and exaggerated them, twisted them, and turned them inside out ending up with Cat Ballou. Instead of a strong, fearless, sharpshooter, Cat Ballou's hero is Kid Shelleen (Marvin), an aging drunkard who sits atop an equally drunk horse.
In the title role, Jane Fonda gives a lively but amusing performance as a young woman who returns home to her Wyoming town only to discover that the Wolf City Development Company has been trying to force her father Frankie (John Marley) off his ranch. Cat enlists the help of legendary gunfighter Kid Shelleen to help defend her father from silver-nosed hired gun Tim Strawn (also played by Marvin). Her father is ultimately killed and Cat, with the help of her posse, vows to avenge her father's death.

'Temenos' means a sacred site or ritual precinct. Temenos, the film, explores the phenomenon of visionary experience.

'Temenos' is an experimental film conceived and directed by London-based artist, filmmaker and lecturer Nina Danino, composed almost entirely of images shot in numerous European locations where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to women – including Banneaux, Lourdes, Fatima, Gibraltar and Medjugorje.

Brooding b/w landscapes make up much of the running time in this evocation of the lingering sense of history in a number of sacred geographical sites. The testimonies of various Marian visionaries are spoken in voice-over as the camera prowls through deep forest and across rugged mountain, while vocal performances at the extreme end of female expressiveness, from guttural howling to soaring soprano, provide an aural complement. It's all very vivid for a while, but not easy to discern just what director Danino is getting at.

Jabberwocky (1977) DVD9 and Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

After a prologue in which a cheerful poacher (Terry Jones) goes through the woods emptying his traps, only to find himself stalked and killed by an unseen monster, we meet Dennis Cooper (Michael Palin), the cheerfully vacuous son of a village craftsman. Dennis has no interest in the craft of barrel-making; he wants to make money by doing things as cheaply as possible, an attitude which enrages his father, who on his deathbed disowns his son. Forced out into the world, Dennis bids farewell to his beloved Griselda (Annette Badland), the monstrous daughter of a tradesman who cares nothing for him, and heads to the city to seek a trade and a fortune.
In the big city, Dennis finds strife and misery. On his last legs, he's mistaken for a prince and a champion and sent off to fight the Jabberwocky, the monster that has been pillaging the village and killing many an innocent folk.

The Entity (1982) Blu-Ray Eureka Classics

The year 1982 is widely regarded as a benchmark for sci-fi and fantasy films, with The Thing, E.T., Blade Runner and Poltergeist being some of the classics being released. While not quite in the same league as these films, The Entity is another of that year's films that reflects well on the genre. Adapted by screenwriter Frank De Felitta from his own novel, based on a supposed true story of a Californian mother who endured repeated sexual abuse at the hands of a ghost, Barbara Hershey plays Carla Moran.

One night while in her bedroom, Carla is attacked by an unseen presence which pins her to her bed and rapes her. After the ordeal is over, neither herself nor her teenage son, Billy (David Labiosa), can find any trace of an intruder. Later that night, objects begin to fly around her room of their own accord and Carla flees the house with her three children. The next day events take a more sinister turn, as the entity takes control of Carla's car and attempts to run her off the road. At the end of her tether, Carla seeks help from psychiatrist, Dr Scheiderman (Ron Silver), however he is sceptical thinking it could be a case of hysteria or a manifestation of childhood sexual trauma...

After the Communist victory in the civil war of 1949, some 1.3 million refugees from Mainland China came to Taiwan. It was a time when the island was governed by a dictatorship in which all political parties other than the Kuomintang were outlawed, and political opponents were persecuted, jailed, and executed, a continuation of the White Terror campaign launched after the 2/28 incident. Uncertain about their future and shaken by the weakening of family traditions, immigrant teenagers joined street gangs like the Little Park Gang and fought against indigenous island groups such as the 217 to strengthen their sense of security.

Like a lot of kids his age, Si'r (Chang Chen, a future Asian movie star) is self-conscious and often withdrawn. The youngest son of his family, which fled from the mainland to Taipei after the Communist victory in 1949, Si'r struggles academically — he's been demoted to the less-prestigious night school — and is caught between two warring street gangs, one made up of fellow mainland transplants and the other populated with sons of the locals. Though occasionally bullied by members of each side, Si'r pledges allegiance to neither, staying out of the conflict that consumes his classmates. That is, until he falls, almost accidentally, into a kind of quasi-romance with Ming (Lisa Yang), who's dating Honey (Lin Hung-ming), absent leader of the Little Park Gang. Before long, this innocent courtship has led him down a path away from his studies and into violence.

Like some contemporary fairytale for grownups, The Lure is a genre hybrid that melds melodrama, horror, fantasy and musical elements into a singular coming-of-age tale.

The story begins with sisters Silver (Marta Mazurek) and Gold (Michalina Olszanska), two mermaids who decide to leave the sea behind and become nightclub singers.
Soon, Silver and Gold are the darlings of the Warsaw nightlife scene—a sexy photo shoot where the sisters pull fishnets over their tails is a nice touch—and Silver falls in love with handsome young bass player Mietek (Jakub Gierszal). But their courtship is complicated, not just because Silver has no genitals in her human form. Meanwhile, Gold is tempted to succumb to much darker urges—namely, the thirst for human blood that is the reason mermaids are blessed with angelic voices to begin with. (It's easier to lure men into the water so you can eat them if you sing them a pretty song.) These discordant views on the proper treatment of human men cause a rift between the sisters.
