Variations – Various Artists interpret Poem (1957) by Michael Snow (2016) DVD5

VARIATIONS includes twelve Canadian moving image and sound artists interpreting Poem (1957) by Michael Snow. The artists selected for this project approached the work from a number of different angles, perspectives and emotions.

Snow's poem provided an anchor for the contributing artists' work to be fastened to, while giving them the freedom to allow their subjectivity to influence the result.

Each of the artists chose to cling to different words, and groupings of words, in creating their own unique narrative, a narrative based on an individual assessment of Poem and how it could be interpreted through moving image and sound.

Yukinojo henge / An Actor’s Revenge (1963) DVD9 and Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

It's a drab tale of melodrama and revenge set in 19th-century Edo (now Tokyo), as an onnagata (a male actor playing exclusively female roles in Kabuki theatre) crafts an intricate plot of retribution against three men who drove his parents to suicide.

Whilst travelling with his theatre troupe, leading female impersonator Yukinojo tracks down the three successful businessmen who drove his parents to madness and suicide through their ruthless pursuit of wealth. Unwilling to despatch them before they recognise the error of their ways, Yukinojo constructs a byzantine plan in which each man plays a part in the others' undoing. Only at the moment of their death does Yukinojo reveal who is responsible for their downfall.

Death Wish (1974) Blu-Ray 40th Anniversary Edition

1974's Death Wish was made at the height of Hollywood's obsession with anti-hero films. Charles Bronson, in a role that would firmly cement his status as a major star, plays dyed-in-the-wool liberal Paul Kersey. A successful architect, Kersey is a happy family man with a beautiful wife and a newly wed daughter. His upper middle class New York lifestyle seems idyllic until one afternoon when three street punks (one of whom is played by Jeff Goldblum in his first big screen role) attack his wife and rape his daughter. By the time Kersey arrives at the hospital his wife has died from her wounds and his daughter has slipped into deep post-traumatic psychosis. Kersey tries to deal with his loss in a number of ways including redecorating his condo and going on a long work related trip. Nothing seems to help though until a client takes him to a shooting range and inadvertently awakens Kersey's vengeful rage. Upon returning to New York Kersey starts an extended killing spree aimed at the hoods and crooks he encounters on the streets.

Daniel (Dave Johns) is a 59-year-old woodworker who's recently experienced a heart attack. Medical issues have ended his working years, relying on government assistance to pay the bills. When Daniel is hit with the news that he's expected to return to employment right away, he's baffled, trying to remain with his doctor's orders to ease back into a routine. However, medical information isn't connecting with benefit sources, sending Daniel, who isn't computer literate, on an endless quest to fix the situation, entering the labyrinth of social services, where every option to continue living is trapped behind bewildering paperwork and professional demands. During this painful journey, Daniel meets Katie (Hayley Squires), a single mother of two who doesn't have any money to support her family. She responds to Daniel's kindness as he helps with home projects, but her own shame is silently destroying her, forced to accept the unthinkable just to afford to buy food for her kids.

Kameradschaft / Comradeship (1931) DVD9 and Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

In the Lorraine region on the French-German border, a gas explosion and series of tunnel collapses threatens the lives of French miners. A German rescue team, headed by Wittkopp, convinces the German mine director to allow them to conduct a rescue operation. In the meantime, a French miner descends an old stairway into the shaft in order to rescue his grandson on his own. The rescue mission ultimately becomes the expression of a common humanity that extends beyond national boundaries.

G. W. Pabst's Kameradschaft (1931) is based on an actual event: the 1906 Courrieres mining disaster in northern France, among the worst industrial accidents in history. A coal dust explosion resulted in 1,060 deaths and German miners from the Westphalia region came to France to assist in the rescue effort. Pabst and his scriptwriters relocated the event to the present day (that is, in the aftermath of World War I) and to the French-German border, transforming the story into a message of pacifism and solidarity among workers. In that respect, the film may be seen as a follow-up to Pabst's previous film, the anti-war picture Westfront 1918 (1930), which shares largely the same production team and even some of the cast members.
