George Washington (2000) DVD9 The Criterion Collection

The story takes place in an dilapidated, industrial North Carolina town where whites and African-Americans live together in poverty. However, this film is not a depressing exploration into the failed American dream or the problems of surviving on little money. Green optimistically focuses his attention on the lives of five young people who each possess their own goals and thoughts about the world. They easily interact with the adults of the community and discuss the dreadful ghosts of both the past and the present. Still, the exuberance of youth pervades the tale even when tragedy strikes a central character. Everything may not work out perfectly, but hope still exists within the minds of the town's residents.
Although the narrator is a girl, the film ends up focusing mostly on the boys. Nasia, her older sister, and her other friends, share humorous talk about boys, and a sense of togetherness. But the boys talk and act in ways that betray disconnection and emptiness. The first part of the film moves in the same wandering, seemingly aimless way as the characters. Then a sudden tragedy confronts the kids with a reality that they have trouble knowing how to deal with.

Maindrain Pace (H.B. Halicki). Everyone knows him as an intelligent, respectable insurance investigator; they also know that he runs a quality auto shop in town. What very few know is that he is the leader of a group of professional car thieves. If a car disappears, it's most likely Pace's gang that's done it. Today is Tuesday and a very valued client has just contacted Pace with an exceptional order. The buyer wants Pace to deliver 48 specific cars to him by Saturday. All are very high-end cars ranging from Mustangs to limousines, making the order difficult to fill under the time limit. Still, Pace savors the challenge and agrees to complete the order.
Forty-seven of the cars they are able to steal with barely a hitch, but the 48th, codenamed Eleanor, is going to cause him more problems than he could ever have imagined. Unfortunately, by random chance, some undercover cops witness Pace stealing Eleanor.
And the chase begins!

One day, he overhears a radio broadcast, forbidden to Polish ears, that reports a major victory for Russian troops over the German army. Enthusiastic about this good news, Jakob begins spreading word of the Russian army's progress through the Polish ghetto. He notices that the story gives people hope and makes it easier for them to get through the day. So Jakob begins inventing stories and passing them along, creating fictional war reports that suggest that the occupation may soon be ending. However, when the occupation troops get wind of these stories, they become convinced that someone has communications equipment stashed away somewhere, and they're determined to find both the radio and its operator at all costs.

Unfortunately, he's an alcoholic and a bit of a wild cannon. Still, he knows his stuff when he's sober, and he's the best chance she has of uncovering the truth. To win they will have to prove a government cover-up and risk their lives in the process. It appears a lot of folks don't want this case to be solved. It's an uphill battle, and everyone has something to hide. It's a "trust no one situation" as Claire and Grimes get to the bottom of the case.
