Dark Passage (1947) DVD9

Bogart portrays wrongly convicted wife-killer Vincent Parry, who stages a desperate escape from San Quentin prison, which we see through his frantic eyes. On a deserted roadside, he's rescued by sympathetic socialite Irene Jansen (Bacall), who identifies with Parry's predicament and believes him to be innocent. Parry hides out in Irene's San Francisco apartment, narrowly evading her busybody friend Madge (Agnes Moorehead) and casual boyfriend Bob (Bruce Bennett). Of course, he yearns to clear his name and root out the real killer of his wife, but to freely roam the city, he needs a new face. A helpful cab driver (Tom D'Andrea) refers Parry to a renegade plastic surgeon (Houseley Stevenson), who alters his features.

Sawdust and Tinsel presents the story of tormented relationships against the garish background of a low-budget traveling circus. Albert (Ake Gronberg), the circus ringmaster, has been tirelessly leading the circus from village to village over the past three years. He is married, but hasn't seen his wife once in those three years. When he decided to become a circus ringmaster, she elected to stay behind and run a little shop. Albert is both fearful and eager to return home, unsure of how his wife will receive him. This is deeply upsetting to Anne (Harriet Anderson), Albert's mistress. She declares that if Albert goes to visit his wife, she will not be waiting for him when or if he returns.
Albert is tired of the circus, and of his mistress, and goes to visit his wife anyway. The mistress reacts by paying a visit to Frans (Hasse Eckman), a lustful actor from the local theatre troupe. As the film progresses, Albert and Anna throw themselves into games of power, psychosexual manipulation, and jealousy—all culminating in a violent and bitter climax in the center of the circus ring.

Bobby quietly helps Craig understand that life isn't so bad, and aids him in pursuit of fragile fellow inmate Noelle (Emma Roberts). Soon Craig realizes that he is actually in possession of a fortunate and blessed existence, deciding instead to focus his energy on improving the lives of his newfound friends.

In this standard story of unrequited love disrupted by war - and peace, Sasha Netuzhilin (Nikolai Burlyayev) is fighting on the front lines in the spring of 1944 when he meets and falls in love with Lyuba Antipovna (Natalia Andreichenko). Sasha's feelings are noted, but not returned because Lyuba is already in a solid relationship with a Soviet army officer. She eventually becomes pregnant, and the officer dies - leaving her in difficult straits indeed. Years later, Sasha accidentally runs into Lyuba on the streets of Odessa, she is a lowly vendor of piroshki (pastry turnovers), and is obviously very poor. Sasha himself is married but that does not stop his old feelings from returning in full force even though Lyuba seems as neutral as ever. This film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Picture in 1984, and had an attendance of 14,000,000 when it was released in the USSR.

My Mammy got married / Mama vyshla zamuzh / Мама вышла замуж (1969) DVD5

A sublime, exceptionally well acted film about a single working class mother and her teenage son. She finds a man and marries him, her son is jealous and full of hot air at first but comes to understand her in the end. That's all. The simplicity of the story notwithstanding, this is one of the most sincere and lyrical films to have been produced in the 1960s-1970s Soviet Union. Very realistic, too, showing the life as it was then. Lyusyena Ovchinnikova is superb, it is this film that makes one realize what a wonderful and under-appreciated actress she was. Nikolay Burlyayev is very good as a lanky teenager, the final scene with him carrying a glass of carbonated water for his mother is stunning. Oleg Efremov is very convincing as a working class man who found his happiness at last.
