Schneider is a hit man, willing to do anything to get the job done. On his birthday he receives a phone call from Mertens, his 'employer', who gives him a new assignment. Although Schneider has promised his wife, Lucy, that he will help her to prepare his birthday dinner, he must accept the assignment. The target is Ramon Bax, a writer who lives in isolation in a house in the middle of a swamp. Bax is the standard cliche of a wretched writer: drugs and alcohol are his daily bread. In a rare moment of clarity, Bax remembers that his daughter Francisca, a depressive and at times, paranoid girl, is due to arrive at any moment.
Schneider agrees, but the easy job turns out to have its complications...

Poet and hero of the American counter-culture, Jonas Mekas, born in Lithuania in 1922, invented the diary form of film-making. Walden, his first completed diary film, an epic portrait of the New York avant-garde art scene of the 60s, is also a groundbreaking work of personal cinema.

"Since 1950 I have been keeping a film diary. I have been walking around with my Bolex and reacting to the immediate reality: situations, friends, New York, seasons of the year. On some days I shot ten frames, on others ten seconds, still on others ten minutes. Or I shot nothing. When one writes diaries, it's a retrospective process: you sit down, you look back at your day, and you write it all down. To keep a film (camera) diary, is to react (with your camera) immediately, now, this instant: either you get it now, or you don't get it at all.

Walden contains materials from the years 1965-69, strung together in chronological order. This mini-series takes place between 1933 and 1939 in a small German town and basically tells the stories of three families, one upper-middle class, with its social ambitions nicely linked to the rise of the Nazis, another lower-middle class, with nervous reservations about what is happening, and the third Jewish, trapped in the expanding horror of Nazi race laws and theories. The film shows very vivid how the political developments, home evenings and Hitler youth infiltration insidiously affect the lives of all. Values and attitudes change through seduction and reprisals. Children and youth are shown as perpetrators and victims at the same time.

Each scene was shot both in English and in German and resulted in two versions of the film which sometimes significantly differ.
