Winfried (Peter Simonischek) is divorced and on the verge of retiring as an eccentric but appreciated music teacher. When his dog suddenly dies, he takes the opportunity to visit his increasingly distant daughter Ines (Sandra Huller), who currently lives in Bucharest working for an important consulting firm in the oil industry. Surprising her with an unexpected weekend visit, father and daughter share a strained, awkward visit which sees Winfried potentially compromise an important contract she's been attempting to secure for quite some time. Sending her father off, she reminisces about the grueling weekend only to discover her father hasn't left. Instead, he drops in on her social life in a garish disguise as someone named Toni Erdmann, an alter ego with a fright wig and false set of snaggleteeth who professes to be her CEO's life coach (as well as the German Ambassador to another set of folks). Ines decides to play along with her father's game, initially to avoid embarrassment with her colleagues. But the strange game begins to have a profound effect on them both.

"If you could really film an entire life in one long shot, is there meaning? Is there even a meaning that can be spoken?" Film student Yan Junjie from the Chinese province of Yunnan records everything that happens in his life between 2001 and 2005: rehearsals with his band, gossiping with friends, scenes at college, at home, in bed with his girlfriend, even the quirky behaviour of his little dog. He films drunken parties, bathing in the lake and over and over again the Chinese New Year. His experiment was about "using film to search for the self". But over the years, he begins to realise that every film is an illusion.

Snippets is a video about the sweet reluctance to become an adult in a country where everyone seems to be seeking only status symbols and advancement. Yan Junjie and his friends belong to a new Chinese generation, uncompromising and free, standing apart from mainstream Chinese society. Yan Junije attempts to capture the irrecoverable moments of youth, a time that is destined to be lost. But all he finds are snippets, fragments and pieces of a unique period of being, of the lust for life.

The youngish members of a theater company led by writer-director Katja (Susanne Thorson) are rehearsing her latest play, but she seems the only person truly invested in the effort. Everyone else is bored, lazy, predatory, pathetic and/or a liar, with nearly all those terms applicable to Katja's boyfriend Alex (Skarsgard), who's about to find out he's impregnated another company member (Philomene Grandin). Other types involved in less-than-hilarious hijinks include the resident Don Juan (Lars Bringas), the lone plus-sized female (Lotti Tornros) and the peeping-tom landlord (Michael Segerstrom) anxious to evict them all for murky reasons.
A 48 hour-long series of intrigues and complications is started when the landlord sneaks around the theatre one night with a camera. Soon a forbidden love affair is revealed and at the same time a mysterious smell is spreading in the house.

Scientist Zac Hobson (Bruno Lawrence) wakes up one morning and heads to the research station where he works. However, he quickly discovers that all of the people who would normally be around him seem to have disappeared into thin air. A gas station he stops at to fill his car is left unattended. Vehicles are left abandoned on the road. A house which he knocks at the door of is revealed to be completely empty. He also discovers the smoldering wreckage of an airliner which has fallen out of the sky. When he eventually enters the lab, he finds that there is nobody there either. When he sends signals out to other labs across the world, he receives no responses from any of them. It appears that a scientific experiment which he has been involved with, known as Project Flashlight, has wiped out most of humanity...

As Zac wanders the deserted city of Hamilton, New Zealand, hoping to find some remnant of life besides himself, his mind begins to disintegrate until fantasy and reality blur together in a heady, terrifying cocktail.
