Broadcast News (1987) 2 x DVD9 Criterion Collection

James L. Brooks's 1987 drama does a fine job at accurately portraying the sort of hustle and bustle of a TV newsroom, and the lives of the reporters involved outside the workplace.
Story centers on three characters working in the world of broadcast journalism. First up is Jane Craig (Holly Hunter, The Piano), a hard-working producer with lofty ambitions and a crusader for honest, ethically produced, substantial news stories. Next up is Aaron Altman (Albert Brooks, Taxi Driver), an intelligent, cynical reporter and Jane's best friend. Finally we have Tom Grunick (William Hurt, A History of Violence), a handsome and charming man without too much intelligence or ability. Naturally, he's being groomed for a job as a network anchor. As these three characters wander through a series of professional and romantic entanglements, they discover important truths about the truly valuable things in life, what it takes to succeed and what it takes to keep feeling good about where your life and career are headed. Welcome to the world of Broadcast News.

Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe (1940) DVD9

The film starts on Earth. A deadly plague has been ravaging the planet, known as the Purple Death because it leaves a purple spot on the forehead of its victims. Flash Gordon, Dale Arden and Dr Zarkov discover that this is being caused by a spaceship from Mongo spraying poison dust in the upper atmosphere. They immediately head to Mongo.
Flash's battle to save Earth and defeat Ming takes him all over the planet Mongo. He must journey to the impossibly cold, frozen land of Frigia to find Polarite, the only known substance that can stop the plague. He must infiltrate Ming's palace—several times, actually—to rescue various and sundry comrades who become captured from time to time, such as Zarkov and Dale. He must face such perils as an avalanche, a flood, many falls from great heights, and an electrified rug. He must also face dangerous enemies, from Ming's trusted lackeys Torch and Thong to the Rock People to the Annihilatons, walking mechanical men that explode like bombs. He cannot fail; the freedom of the people of Mongo and the survival of the people of Earth (not to mention the excitement of moviegoers) rest on his shoulders.

Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula / Nachts, wenn Dracula erwacht (1970) DVD9

Jess Franco's Count Dracula is definitely one of the more literal adaptations of Bram Stoker's original novel.

Opening in 1897 Transylvania, we meet young lawyer Jonathan Harker as he travels by train to meet with Count Dracula (Christopher Lee, who needs no introduction!) who is in the midst of purchasing a gloomy old building in London where he intends to relocate to. He ignores the warnings of locals not to go to Dracula's castle.
After a rather shaky coach trip to the castle, Harker meets the Count, a noble looking grey haired man who seems nice enough despite some quirks. That night, after dinner, Harker finds that he's been locked inside his bedroom and he knows that something is amiss. Soon, Harker finds out that Dracula is in fact a vampire and that he drinks the blood of the living. Harker manages to escape from the castle alive and get back to England. There he meets with a man named Professor Abraham Van Helsing and the two of them discover that Dracula has already made the move and is operating in the area. Who first victims?

Pierre Perrault Film Works – Volume 4: Man and Nature / L’oeuvre de Pierre Perrault – Volume 4: L’homme et la nature

The works of Pierre Perrault are unique in world cinema heritage. They directly capture life and the spoken word, filmed by an explorer and poet who set out to discover an aspect of mankind forgotten by recorded history.

The films in this box set draw us deep into the heart of Quebec and into Native territory, where the natural world leaves a lasting mark on human nature. Now confined to reserves, the Montagnais have kept alive the memory of this close relation with nature and return to the land of their ancestors for a memorable hunting expedition. Two films about a once nomadic, now sedentary people.

The box set also contains La bete lumineuse (The Shimmering Beast), one of the most powerful works of direct cinema. A group of friends sets off into the wilderness for a traditional moose hunt. The return to nature forces them to confront themselves and the shooting expedition quickly becomes less about moose than men.
