The Princess and the Pea / Printsessa na goroshine / Принцесса на горошине (1976) DVD9 RUSCICO

This is the classical retelling of the charming fairytale the Princess and the Pea, the story of a pretty young girl who arrives at a castle claiming to be a princess. The prince falls in love with her at once, but his cautious parents decide to test her to see if she is a real princess by putting a pea beneath twenty mattresses she must sleep on. This film focuses mainly upon the handsome young prince, who, just after the arrival of the self-proclaimed princess, sets off on a quest to find a real princess to marry. During his quest he encounters a foolish, superficial princess, a princess who challenges her poor suitors with an impossible riddle to get rid of them and a princess devoted to art. Returning home empty-handed and broken-hearted, the prince realizes a real princess has been under his nose all along in the form of the young girl who arrived on his doorstep. Beautiful scenery, a wonderful storyline and great acting combine to make an enchanting film. Highly recommended for those who love a good fairytale.

Heimat – Eine deutsche Chronik / Homeland: A German Chronicle / Heimat: A Chronicle of Germany (1984) 6 x DVD9

Heimat, roughly translated as "Homeland", takes place in the small village of Schabbach and tells the story of the Simon family, from 1919 to 1982. From the Third Reich, to the economic boom in the 1950s and the resolution of the Cold War in the 1980s, three generations of the Simon clan live through the most decisive moments in modern German history. Rather than focus on well-known national leaders, the series looks at a modest family trying to cope with rapidly changing circumstances.
Central person is Maria, who we see growing from a 17 year old girl to an old woman, and her family. The family, like the rest of the German people live through the crises after WW-I, the rise and fall of Nazism and WW-II, and the rebuilding and the following prosperity of the village (as a symbol for the whole country) after WW II.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) DVD9

The untimely death of a junior Senator (from an unnamed American state) sends political boss Jim Taylor (Edward Arnold) into a momentary panic. Taylor needs the votes in the Senate to back a pork barrel project that will line his pockets. He controls the state's Governor, Hubert Hopper (Guy Kibbee) and the state's beloved senior Senator, Joseph Paine (Claude Rains), who suggest a popular citizen and local Boy Ranger leader, Jefferson Smith (James Stewart) to fill the empty position. Smith is humbled and proud to be under the wing of Paine, who had known Smith's late father, a crusading journalist. The patriotic Smith drinks in the sights in the nation's Capitol and reports to the Senate. He is hit hard upon his arrival by the Washington Press Corps, including reporter Diz Moore (Thomas Mitchell), who paint him as a naive fool in the newspapers. With the encouragement of Paine and with help from his cynical assistant Clarissa Saunders (Jean Arthur), Smith begins to draft a bill to est ablish a Boy's Camp in his state. Unfortunately, Smith's bill conflicts with Taylor's plans for pork politics; Taylor turns all of his might against Smith, including Senator Paine. Smith sees the enormity of the forces against him, but he is determined to get the truth out to the people of his state. Saunders is falling in love with Smith, and she, Diz, and others sympathetic to the effort, including the President of the Senate (Harry Carey), help Smith in his last-ditch effort to clear his name.

A Moon for the Misbegotten (1975) DVD9

Theatrical sparks flew when veteran Eugene O'Neill interpreters Jason Robards and Colleen Dewhurst joined forces in the celebrated 1973 revival of O'Neill's tender semi-autobiographical drama. In a towering performance, the great Robards portrays a cynical, self-hating alcoholic actor based on O'Neill's elder brother, Jamie. The majestic Colleen Dewhurst plays the earthy, gruff daughter of his scheming Irish tenant farmer (Ed Flanders), with whom the failed actor spends a soul-baring night of guilt-ridden confessions, tenderness, and absolution. Both Dewhurst and Flanders won Tony Awards for their performances.
