A Day at the Beach (1972) DVD5

Mark Burns (Stardust) plays Bernie, the film's alcoholic centerpiece. Bernie's life is in shambles at the moment. He hasn't got a job, he's always drunk, and he owes plenty of people money. For some reason, he is permitted to take his 8-year-old niece Winnie (Beatie Edney, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day) out for the day. Borrowing a couple of large bills from his brother-in-law, Bernie takes Winnie to the beach. Walking down the shore, he keeps stopping in at various beach side shops and establishments, all of which just so happen to sell alcohol.
As Bernie starts hitting the bottle, his physical and emotional stability starts to crumble, until he finally collapses and Winnie is left with no one to look after her.

Skin (2008) DVD9

It's an extraordinary story, one that only real life could invent. It begins in the mid 50s, when a rather ordinary Afrikaner couple have a baby - a girl with brown skin. Born in the apartheid era, Sandra's life becomes a nightmare when she starts going to school. The whites see her as a coloured girl, a reject in white society. But that's the least of it.
Sandra embarks on a thirty-year journey that takes her from rejection to acceptance, betrayal to reconciliation, as she struggles to define her place in a changing world.
After many more years of hardship and struggle, the chances of that reunion ever happening seem remote. But Sandra carries her father's advice with her wherever she goes: "Never give up!" Skin is a story of family, forgiveness and the triumph of the human spirit.

Choose Me (1984) DVD5

This critically praised sleeper stars Genevieve Bujold as Dr. Nancy Love, a romance-phobic radio sex therapist who inadvertently becomes roommates with Eve (Lesley Ann Warren), a sexually uninhibited bar owner and one of Dr. Love's frequent callers. Handsome, smooth-talking mental patient Mickey (Keith Carradine) comes to the bar and proceeds to woo and confuse both women as well as an aspiring poetess, Pearl (Rae Dawn Chong), who suspects Nancy is having an affair with her abusive French husband, Zack (Patrick Bachau). As the wild nights progress, all the women find themselves drawn to the mysterious Mickey, arousing the wrath of Zack and ensuring hilarious, moving, and thought-provoking moments. It's a dreamy concoction of sex, love, and brilliant dialogue, all wrapped up in a purposely artificial neon-drenched atmosphere with deliriously romantic music from soul crooner Teddy Pendergrass.

Summerfield (1977) DVD9

When teacher Simon arrives in a small, secluded village to take over the local school, he is surprised to discover that his predecessor has disappeared without a trace - and that nobody seems too concerned about it. As Simon probes deeper into the disappearance, the inhabitants of a forbidding estate called "Summerfield" take on more and more significance - until events reach a tragic, shattering and unforeseen climax.

Summerfield is often described as the Australian Wicker Man, but that description is as misleading. Summerfield is an excellent Aussie thriller-drama. It's moody, bleak, and features a very unsettling ending. A definite must-see for fans of 70s Australian cinema.
