37 Days (2014) DVD9

Covering the final weeks before the outbreak of war, 37 Days follows the rapidly changing crisis through the eyes of the principal players, during a hot summer, from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June 1914, to the declaration of war between Britain and Germany on 4 August. The drama serial will overturn orthodox assumptions about the war's inevitability. Such a disaster did not happen by chance, and nor was it a foregone conclusion. It took considerable effort and terrific ingenuity, as well as staggering bad luck, to destroy a system that had kept the general peace in Europe for the 99 years that followed the Battle of Waterloo and the fall of Napoleon.
The miniseries is a mixture of drama and documentary, its tone is somewhat aseptically dry in which many details are simplified, but it highlights some aspects in order to answer the question that the viewer makes constantly: how we go from peace to war in just over a month?

Anomalisa (2015) DVD9

Modern life with its ambitions, relationships and career success contrast with personal angst, malice and disillusion in Charlie Kaufman's animation for adults. This is a wonderful narrative of personality and personal problems linked with fear, philosophy and romance.
Michael Stone is the author of a book on the skill of customer service, attending a conference in Cincinnati where many have come to hear him speak & learn from his genius. Ironically, Michael doesn't see those around his as the individuals he preaches about in his book, instead viewing every person as a collection of boring voices & faces. That is, until he meets Lisa. She's an anomaly in his cookie-cutter world, a voice that sings in his ears instead of droning on, a face that elicits excitement instead of dread. And so a very short hotel love affair ensues, one that banishes thoughts of his wife & son to the recesses of his mind, and allows him to believe that perhaps Lisa is special, perhaps he just hadn't found "the one" until now, and perhaps life doesn't have to be as meaningless as it has felt so far.

The film opens with a 75th birthday party for Helene (Edith Scob), an elegant widow who lives in a tasteful country estate an hour's drive from Paris. Her three adult children are there to celebrate along with their families. Dutiful Frederic (Charles Berling) is the eldest, and the only one still living in France. Jeremie (Jeremie Renier) has been living in Beijing with his family and working for Puma, the tennis shoes company. Adrienne (Juliette Binoche) is living in New York with her American boyfriend (Kyle Eastwood, Clint's son), designing goods for Takashimaya, the Japanese department store chain.
The sudden death of the family matriarch Helene leaves her children with the painful dissection of her home, personal belongings and the last of the art collection of her Uncle Paul, a famous artist who died leaving her many valuable heirlooms. Tension between the three grown up siblings is palpable as they realise that their lives and desires have diverged completely; they all retain fond memories of a childhood centered on visits to the house, but they all have completely different needs.

This mammoth set contains 32 films of the much beloved silent film comedic genius and thus is an absolute 'must' for all fans of BUSTER KEATON!

Over the course of four discs we follow the rise of Keaton's career when he took his first steps as a film actor - after having spent almost all of his youth on stage and in the world of Vaudeville – courtesy of his parents Myra and Joseph, two seasoned stage actors. In fact, father Joseph owned a traveling show together with Harry Houdini called 'The Mohawk Medicine Company'. And it was during his young years that little Joseph (performing with his parents as 'The Three Keatons') acquired the nickname 'Buster' due to his talent of falling and tumbling without getting bruised or seriously injured. It was a talent that would serve him well in years to come!

Buster Keaton - the little fellow with the porkpie hat and the frozen face - never knew any other purpose in life except to make audiences laugh. His film career began in 1917, when comedian Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle saw him on the vaudeville circuit and hired him. After making a series of Arbuckle shorts, including The Butcher Boy, Coney Island and The Cook, Keaton struck out on his own in 1919, when he acquired Charlie Chaplin's old studio and began producing his own independent comedies. Before turning to feature production in 1923, he created some of the finest short comic masterpieces of the silent era in nineteen two-reelers, the finest of which include The High Sign, One Week and Cops.

This is cinematic history and each of the short films in this collection is a miniature monument to an artform that was suddenly realising its cinematic potential.

A 13-year-old growing up in a working class Moroccan-Israeli community, Aharon Ninio is having a tough time. His father is distant; bullies hound him on the street; and the girl of his dreams barely knows he exists.
