As the film progresses, Albert and Anna throw themselves into games of power, psychosexual manipulation, and jealousy—all culminating in a violent and bitter climax in the center of the circus ring.

This film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Picture in 1984, and had an attendance of 14,000,000 when it was released in the USSR.

A sublime, exceptionally well acted film about a single working class mother and her teenage son. She finds a man and marries him, her son is jealous and full of hot air at first but comes to understand her in the end. That's all. The simplicity of the story notwithstanding, this is one of the most sincere and lyrical films to have been produced in the 1960s-1970s Soviet Union. Very realistic, too, showing the life as it was then. Lyusyena Ovchinnikova is superb, it is this film that makes one realize what a wonderful and under-appreciated actress she was. Nikolay Burlyayev is very good as a lanky teenager, the final scene with him carrying a glass of carbonated water for his mother is stunning. Oleg Efremov is very convincing as a working class man who found his happiness at last.

The story takes place in an dilapidated, industrial North Carolina town where whites and African-Americans live together in poverty. However, this film is not a depressing exploration into the failed American dream or the problems of surviving on little money. Green optimistically focuses his attention on the lives of five young people who each possess their own goals and thoughts about the world. They easily interact with the adults of the community and discuss the dreadful ghosts of both the past and the present. Still, the exuberance of youth pervades the tale even when tragedy strikes a central character. Everything may not work out perfectly, but hope still exists within the minds of the town's residents.
Although the narrator is a girl, the film ends up focusing mostly on the boys. Nasia, her older sister, and her other friends, share humorous talk about boys, and a sense of togetherness. But the boys talk and act in ways that betray disconnection and emptiness. The first part of the film moves in the same wandering, seemingly aimless way as the characters. Then a sudden tragedy confronts the kids with a reality that they have trouble knowing how to deal with.

It's an uphill battle, and everyone has something to hide. It's a "trust no one situation" as Claire and Grimes get to the bottom of the case.

Copen extends a friendly hand to Decker, with no strings attached. Decker is scared of Copen, but he's more afraid of the various deviants and hardcore criminals trying to victimize him. Eventually, their relationship deepens into an honest friendship with both of them trying to figure out how to get out of prison the honest way, by manipulating the law. When events in the prison damage both their reputations, though, the legal means no longer work so they beg! in entertaining the notion of escape.

Anthony (Cary Grant) is a British naval officer who landed in Spain during the Napoleonic wars to make contact with Spanish forces. His mission is to prevent a Spanish cannon, the largest in the world, from falling into the hands of the French. Anthony wants to take it out of Spain, but the leader of the guerrilla forces, Miguel (played by Frank Sinatra) wants to take the gun to Avila and blast the French out of that city and out of Spain. They are able to work together and achieve this, in spite of a battling between themselves for the love of Juana (Sophia Loren).
Their only problem is how to smuggle the large weapon through hundreds of miles of French - controlled territory.

The year is 1999, and the world is on the brink of a nuclear confrontation. Claire Tourneur (Solveig Dommartin), a disenchanted young bohemian, is involved in a lackluster relationship with novelist Eugene Fitzpatrick (Sam Neill). Driving across Europe on her way home from a decadent party, she has a car accident that involves her with two bank robbers, Chico and Raymond (Chick Ortega and Eddy Mitchell). Claire ends up agreeing to transport their heist to Paris in exchange for a cut of the proceeds. Then she meets Sam Farber (William Hurt), an enigmatic traveler who steals some of the loot from her car before going on his mysterious way. Enraged and intrigued, Claire sets off to track him down. Her quest takes her around the world in a cosmopolitan blur of languages, cultures and high-tech computer images, ending in the Australian outback, where Sam's father (Max von Sydow) has a laboratory.

Sam, it develops, has been using a special camera to collect images from his global trek. His father is working on a process that will enable Sam's mother (Jeanne Moreau) to "see" these images, even though she is blind. Convinced by an absence of radio signals that a nuclear holocaust has taken place, everyone devotes themselves to helping with Mr. Farber's experiments. Their work bears fruit; the machine not only gives sight to the blind but also allows users to view their dreams on screen. These beautiful images, however, prove dangerously addictive.

The boy dreamed to find his own mother, so he decided to set off in search of her. It was the period of the opening and encounters with the mysterious and dangerous world. The world of children with their own laws. And there is sometimes one's heart speaks louder than an intellect.

"Doc" Riedenschneider (played by Sam Jaffe) is a criminal who became a underworld legend because of his methodically planned heists. After being released from prison, he wants to put one of his old plans - robbery of jewellery store - into action, but he needs personnel and someone to finance the operation. After being approached by Alonzo P. Emmerich (played by Louis Calhern), a lawyer with criminal connections, "Doc" begins assembling his crew. The safecracker is Louis Ciavelli (played by Anthony Caruso), who accepts the job because he wants to feed his family. The "muscleman" is Dix! Handley (played by Sterling Hayden), violent street mugger who wants to pay his gambling debts, and the getaway driver is Gus Minissi (played by James Whitmore), hunchback and Dix's only friend. The heist, although methodically executed, goes bad, and in the end, the criminals themselves are in danger of being robbed.

Pearl Chavez, a half breed girl, is sent to live with distant relatives following the hanging of her father, who shot and killed Pearl's adulterous mother. Upon her arrival at the huge McCanless ranch, two brothers, Lewt and Jesse, are immediately smitten with Pearl. Lewt (Gregory Peck), the bad boy of the two, seduces Pearl but has no intentions of marrying her. The good brother, Jesse (Joseph Cotten), marries someone else but is still protective of Pearl and asks her to come and live with him and his wife. Tensions rise as the love triangle culminates in a violent end.

Naive, by the book French police officer Nester Patou, is transferred to the Red Light district. Upon witnessing what must be a brothel, he calls the station and organizes a raid, transporting all the 'ladies' to the jail. This unfortunately disrupts the well organized system of the police and the Pimps union. Not to mention inadvertently netting his station superior at the brothel. Fired, he goes to a bar to drink, is befriended by Irma, beats up her pimp, and finds he is now Irma's new pimp. Nester's doesn't like the thought of his girl seeing other men, so comes up with a plan.
