During the 1920s, Soviet documentary and fiction films were financed by the State, and their fledgling directors, some barely out of their teens, converted their lives from theater, engineering, painting and journalism to the practice and theory of a revolutionary cinema devoted to showing the achievements and aspirations of the new Socialist society. Their problem was to captivate an enormous, culturally diverse, multi-lingual, semi-literate population in ways that would be emotionally compelling, yet ideologically clear.

The proven ability of movies to achieve this difficult goal inspired Lenin's famous dictum, "For us, cinema is the most important art.," and their stunning innovations recharged world cinema. Editing, or "montage," is the common organizational basis of these films and each of the filmmakers believed the arrangement of shots to be the foundation of film art.

All the films in this set are major works and all are new to DVD. They are Boris Barnet's The House on Trubnaya Square (1928), often described as one of the best Soviet silent comedies; Lev Kuleshov's By the Law (1926), a tense drama set in Alaska and based upon a short story by Jack London.

Based on a short story by the great 19th-century Russian writer Nikolai Gogol (better known for Diary of a Madman, The Government Inspector and Dead Souls) which was also the source material for Mario Bava's legendary Black Sunday, Viy is a wonderfully vivid supernatural horror film boasting some superbly realised set-pieces and special effects.

Viy tells the story of a mischievous theology student named Thomas Brutus who is called to read scripture beside the coffin of a recently deceased young woman. For three consecutive evenings, her father locks Thomas inside the rural church/barn where his daughter's coffin has been placed. Promptly at midnight, she then rises from the coffin -- for she was a witch -- and a savage battle takes place between the forces of good and evil. With chalk, Thomas marks off a circle around himself, and this keeps the evil forces from destroying him. But this doesn't stop the witch from trying her best to overpower him. Ultimately she calls forth the denizens of hell to assist her.

Two chapters, two epochs, one story. One is the 1937, the apogee of the Stalinist purges in Yerevan, in the Soviet Armenia, the year when Nora DabagyanТs father, a political dissident was arrested. The other is 2006, the circumstantial story of the arrest related by the old woman, affectionately known as Baboulia, who was a very young girl in 1930s. The tense question between these two sides is how to transmit and what the images and sensations should be conveyed?
Two parts are clearly defined. The first, fictional, silent, is made up of impressions and sensations. The second, more documentary, is build on the words of the old woman. But the two time periods cross over, the stories and the words mix up. The film is homage to transmission and memory.

Ararat (2002) DVD9

"Ararat" is complex, multi-layered and deeply ambitious, the only movie from Western culture to confront the 1915 Turkish massacre of the Christian Armenian residents of Anatolia, a part of Turkey. To this day, the Turkish government stoutly denies that any such event too place, though survivors, including American missionary Clarence Ussher, told of their experiences. Over a million people were killed, in combat, in brutal executions, and on a forced march through what is now Syria.

"Ararat" explicitly views the past from the perspective of the present, using the device of a film-within-a-film. Director (Charles Aznavour) and screenwriter (Eric Bogosian), both from Armenian descent, are shooting a historical drama in present-day Toronto, based on an American eye-witness account of the siege of Van.
