Life in post-independent Guinea Bissau is affectionately and tellingly captured in this ravishingly beautiful and insightful feature from Flora Gomes, who brings a vibrant sense of people, place, politics and atmosphere to the screen.

Udju Azul di Yonta tells the story of three people, each of whom is so much in love with their dreams that they mis the real opportunities which life offers. Vicente, a hero of the revolution, now a businessman, is so despondent over the failure of his political ideas that he fails to notice the flirtations of Yonta, the beautiful, young daughter of two former comrades. Yonta represents the younger generation who have grown up since independence and replaced revolutionary rhetoric with an unabashed enthusiasm for Western consumer culture. She, in turn, is oblivious to the attentions of Ze, a poor student from the country, who sends her absurdly romantic poems (actually written for a Swedish girl) praising her improbably "blue eyes".

Key Largo is a tropical island linked to the Florida mainland by a flat concrete bridge. This is hurricane country, but at Key Largo humans are more dangerous than hurricanes.

The number 188 appears on screen, followed by a sound collage over black and finally by a black-and-white overhead shot of a sparsely furnished room, with five people (referred to as Participants) lined up at the bottom of the frame. A character known as the Minutetaker sits to the left of them. The Minutetaker informs the Participants that the second night's final "Document" screening is over and that they are dismissed for the day, but must come back for the third and final session.
The Minutetaker is our only direct link into an logical comprehension of what is appearing before our eyes. In the early minutes of the film he confesses to us his sorrow over how the five men cannot comprehend the documents are mirrors of their own existence. He comments on their futile efforts to make sense of what's before them. How they have made a meaningless chart and made rules that comes to nothing. He notes that they will fail, like all before them, and that at the end of the last 90 minute session their lives will end...
