A documentary film commissioned by the British Film Institute as part of a large-scale commemoration of the Century of Cinema. Among the other participants of the commemoration project are Martin Scorsese, Jean-Luc Godard, Stephen Frears, and others.
The film uses material of from the classics of 20th-century Russian and Soviet cinema and develops the authors' notion of "the Russian idea". Director Sergei Selyanov links Russia's cinema to the national character, with its desire for revolution and search for Utopia. The film uses excerpts of the book The Russian Idea by Nikolai Berdyaev, and footage from films by Sergey Eisenstein, Alexander Dovzhenko, Dziga Vertov, Abram Room, Boris Barnet, Sergey Yutkevich, Andrey Tarkovsky, and others.
