'Giorgino' tells the story of Giorgio, a young soldier returning from the First World War, having been struck down by mustard gas. Ailing, he seeks the orphans he used to care for. Discovering that they'd been displaced due to the shelling, his journey leads him to the quiet town of Chanteloup.
There he discovers that all of the orphans have died under mysterious circumstances, with conflicting claims that they'd drowned or that roaming wolves had eaten them. There is even the allusion that their doctor may have poisoned them. Giorgio intends to find out the truth, however elusive it may be.
The isolated villagers, all of whom are women (except for the town priest), are not helping to shed any light on the mystery; there's a definite air of madness floating about. Meanwhile, Giorgio becomes infatuated with Catherine, a childlike young woman ensconced at the heart of this tragedy.

At first stunned by the news that his mother has a boyfriend, Jaime agrees to meet the new man in his mother's life.

Directed by Tony Richardson, a leading light of that movement, and based on one of the most controversial plays of its time, A Taste of Honey features Rita Tushingham in her star-making debut role as a disaffected teenager finding her way amid the economic desperation of industrial Manchester, and despite her absent, self-absorbed mother.

Lonely teenager Jo (Rita Tushingham) lives with her neglectful, promiscuous mother (Dora Bryan) in Manchester. After a brief romance with a black sailor, she finds herself pregnant, and her mother is too busy getting married to a lout (Robert Stephens) to pay much attention. Rather than living as part of an unhappy family, she opts to move in with her gay friend Geoff (Murray Melvin) and form their own version of a family.

Tony Richardson's A Taste of Honey is a truly groundbreaking film that, among other things, is largely responsible for the legitimization of homosexual characters in mainstream British cinema. It is based on Shelagh Delaney's popular play of the same name, which Richardson had previously staged.

In December 2011, filmmaker Martin Scorsese travelled to Poland to accept an honorary degree from The Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School in Lodz. During his stay in Poland, he met with Jedrzej Sablinski (a digital restoration expert, now DI Factory CEO), and discussed the digital restoration in Poland achieved within the KinoRP project. In the months following this visit, with the help of The Film Foundation executive director Margaret Bodde and The Digital Film Repository CEO Maciej Molewski (now with all DOTS), the idea of a North American tour of a series of restored Polish classics came together. From an extensive catalogue, Martin Scorsese chose twenty-one masterpieces.

Premiering in New York City at the Film Society of Lincoln Center on February the 5th, 2014, the series featured films from some of Poland's most accomplished and lauded filmmakers, spanning the period from 1957-1987. Each film has been brilliantly restored and digitally remastered to 2K resolution, and brought to the standards of DCP distribution. The program was created by Martin Scorsese's non-profit organisation The Film Foundation, organised in partnership with the National Audiovisual Institute of Poland, and with the support of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland, the Polish Film Institute as well as Kadr, Tor and Zebra film studios.

The Black Stallion (1979) 2 x DVD9 and Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

Young Alec Ramsey and his father are on a ship somewhere off the coast of Africa. Alec is bored and while wandering around the ship witnesses how a group of men try to tame a beautiful black stallion. Later on, the boy gives the stallion a few sugar cubes and angers one of its guards. During a powerful storm the ship catches fire and people are forced to jump in the ocean. The stallion is also set free. While the ship slowly begins to sink, Alec and the stallion find each other in the freezing water and together reach a deserted island.
It takes a long time before some Italian fishermen discover Alec. During that time he and the stallion learn to trust each other and then become best friends. Upon their rescue, Alec and the magnificent horse continue their adventures when they join forces with ex-jockey and horse trainer Henry Dailey.

This is a remarkably beautiful looking film with great photography. There are so many stunning moments throughout the film with beautiful sunsets, the blue ocean, and other wonderful scenic elements. The film is a fantastic moving painting. The score for the film is beautiful and hypnotic. The music and photography are terrific together. The filmmaking is pure art: more poetic and reflective than commercial. It mesmerizes and creates a real sense of cinematic magic.

Nazi cinema produced numerous WW2 military epics, one of the most impressive of which is Ufa's first-rate 1941 production, Uber Alles in der Welt,directed by Karl Ritter (Stukas). Ritter customarily produced morale-building propaganda pictures, and this, his first propaganda film to deal with the war, as well as his finest effort, was one of the highest-grossing pictures of the Third Reich. Set largely in France, England, and Spain, the film chronicles the plight of Germans caught by the outbreak of war and their frantic attempts to return to the Fatherland to join the battle. All of Germany's enemies receive equal disdain. The British, the French, the Poles, and the Jews are portrayed respectively as warmongers, profiteers and cowards. In the end, all that is important is returning to Germany. As Ritter put it in Ufa's pressbook, Uber Alles in der Welt presents "a dynamic apotheosis of the certainty of German victory" in the fight "forced upon" the German nation and the German peoples' resistance against the dark powers in enemy camps.

In 9th Century pre-Christian Poland, a cruel prince regent called Popiel is holding the throne until his warriors return from battle. Amongst the warriors are the dead King's two twin sons, one of whom will be chosen as his father's successor. Popiel has other ideas though. He has a son to a woman slave and is desperate for his son to succeed him to the throne, egged on by the boy's mother.
Popiel greets the victorious warriors back from battle and throws a banquet in their honour, but sneakily poisons and kills one of the heirs whilst throwing suspicion on the other, who is blinded as punishment and banished.
The only opposer to these plans is Piastun, commander of the Army and Guardian of the two twin princes. Piastun leaves the castle grounds in order to seek support and the truth, but Popiel has other ideas.
Ambushed in the forest, Piastun is saved by Ziemovit, a young warrior who is also an outcast but from the Viking hordes. He is in love with a young beautiful maiden, but their love is forbidden as she has been promised to the Gods. Written, directed, and starring Lena Duhnam, Tiny Furniture is the story about a college graduate whose life falls apart as she returns home to live with her mother and younger sister as she seeks to try to find herself in post-college life. The film is an exploration in the world of a young adult trying to find a sense of direction as she feels shunned by her own mother and sister in their Tribeca loft in New York City.

Post-college life is a period in time when a person has to figure out what to do just as they're to emerge into adulthood. In this film, it is about a young woman named Aura (Lena Duhnam) who had just broken up with her boyfriend and has no idea what to do despite getting a college degree in film studies. Yet, she returns to her Tribeca loft where her mother Siri (Dunham's actual mother, Laurie Simmons) runs a photography studio while her younger sister Nadine (Dunham's real life sister Grace Dunham) is a high school student. Neither Siri nor Nadine are happy about Aura returning as Aura struggles to figure out her next move as she befriends a video artist named Jed (Alex Karpovsky) and works as a hostess where she befriends a chef named Keith (David Call). Still, Aura isn't sure about the direction of her life as her longtime friend Charlotte (Jemima Kirke) tries to help her out but often in the worst possible ways.

Tiny Furniture presents a bittersweet portrait of a lonely, confused, and thin-skinned 24-year-old New Yorker. In a period of transition, she struggles to define herself as a daughter, sister, artist, friend, and lover.

Because Kieslowski worked primarily in a nominally communist country that was uneasy about exporting his films, international acclaim eluded him until his final set of masterpieces: "The Decalogue", "The Double Life Of Veronique", and the "Three Colors" trilogy (Blue, White, and Red), all of which consciously avoided commenting directly on socialism's decay.

"Blind Chance" tells three stories that imagine three different possible paths in a young man's life. The man is Witek (Boguslaw Linda), a Polish medical student who has abandoned his studies in the wake of his father's recent death. He decides to board a train and go to Warsaw for a while. In the first story, he catches the train. In the second story, he misses the train, accidentally knocks over a police officer and gets arrested. In the third story, he misses the train and encounters an old friend. In each story, Witek's life takes a dramatically different path.

The film explores all three possibilities as a kind of flashback from the moment of death; it can be seen as a more serious precursor to multiple-reality movies like American romantic comedy "Sliding Doors" or German philosophical thriller "Run Lola Run".

Krzysztof Kieslowski completed "Blind Chance" in 1981, but the film was immediately banned and wasn't officially released until 1987. First suppressed and then censored by the Polish government, Blind Chance is here presented in its complete original form.
