The French are known for incorporating sexually explicit material in their films, probably more so than other nations where over exposed graphic sex and full frontal nudity are considered vital elements in their storytelling. "Blue Is The Warmest Colour" is the latest offering from France revolving around the sexual awakening of a young girl which will shock audiences who have over the years enjoyed watching films in this genre.
Adele is a shy teenager who feels excluded from her social peers. While her friends moan about schoolwork and talk endlessly about sex and boys, Adele plunges herself into classic French literature. She accepts a date with a popular boy at school but on the way to meet him she passes a beautiful blue-haired older girl and later that night, after losing her virginity to her date, Adele masturbates about this mysterious girl. On a trip to a gay bar with a homosexual friend, Adele is approached by the girl, who reveals herself as Emma. Captivated by her beauty and knowledge of art, Adele falls for Emma and the two embark on a passionate relationship...
Based on Julie Maroh's graphic novel of the same name, "Blue is the Warmest Color" takes its time while fleshing out two stages in Adele's life -- before and after high-school -- across nearly three hours of deliberate, expressive filmmaking, capturing the intimacy and intensity of her burgeoning sexuality.
