This classic film from the great Spanish director Luis Bunuel is essentially one big slap to the face of the elites that thrived during General Franco's dictatorship.
Bunuel describes it as "the story of a group of friends who have dinner together after seeing a play, but when they go into the living room after dinner, they find that for some inexplicable reason they can't leave." For equally inexplicable reasons, after preparing dinner for the guests, all but one of the servants feel compelled to flee the mansion. Trapped in the living room, the guests soon begin to panic. Hours turn into days and food and water are running out. Still the guests are compelled by force or forces unknown to stay and continue the party. As hunger comes to rule the trapped group, their tempers and sanity fray...
Bunuel takes great pleasure in humiliating the elitist crowd inside the house, but knowing how he was treated during the Franco era it is hardly surprising. So the whole concept behind the film is basically a form of carefully crafted intellectual revenge served in a pretty uncompromising fashion.
