Joe Dakota (1957) DVD9

While Joe Dakota is searching for his friend, whom he calls The Old Indian, he rides into the seemingly abandoned town of Arborville, California. When he goes to visit the nearby farm owned by the Indian, he witnesses an oil well being dug. Cal Moore, the leader of the enterprise, allows Joe to watch the proceedings, but when Joe enters a cabin on the land, Cal gets angry and his men push Joe into the oil pool. Joe goes back to Arborville, where Jody Weaver, a young woman he had met upon his arrival, gives him fresh clothes. While Joe is taking a bath in the town's horse trough, the townspeople return from the well and are outraged. Joe asks about the Indian, but like Jody, the people refuse to talk.
The townspeople later are horrified when the stranger announces that he owns the land where the oil well is, and that his name is Joe Dakota.

Revered as one of the world's most significant figures in animation, Czech filmmaker Jiri Barta has made a career fashioning stunningly gothic worlds of horror and fantasy that are infused with sublime humor and intense moral examinations. Mixing the aesthetic traditions of such artists as Gaudi, Kafka, Poe, Fritz Lang, The Brothers Quay and Jan Svankmajer, Barta's films are wondrous creations that go far beyond mere children's tales.

The film follows Elvira as she attempts to find a new role in life, picking up the pieces after her quixotic actions. Like many Fassbinder films, the result is rather tragic, but the motivation that drives the narrative is love and the protagonistТs search for it.

Tintin and I is a documentary about Georges Remi (1907-93), better known to the world as Herge, creator of the much-loved comic-book character Tintin. The adventures of Tintin spanned 23 volumes, which were initially printed as a weekly strip in the newspaper Le Vingtieme Siecle beginning in 1929 and later published in a series of books in colour after World War II. The Tintin books have sold millions of copies the world over and are much-loved children's favourites.
The film is based around Numa Sadoul's revealing interviews with Herge from the 1970s, and goes into detail about Herge's life and how the success of Tintin affected it.
The film is based strongly around Herge's experiences and state of mental health leading up to the writing of Tintin in Tibet, often heralded as Herge's most personal album. The history of Tintin is examined through Herge's life and the way that he was affected by the growing popularity of his character.

In 1976, Herge is 69 years old and completes his last book, Tintin and the Picaros. In the same year, "I, Tintin" brought to film a portrait of the creator of Tintin for the first time. It shows, through the adventures of Tintin, the close connections between the creator and his gallery of characters.

Strictly devout and slightly priggish, Police Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) uses a small seaplane to visit the many scattered islands in the North of Scotland. He goes to balmy Summerisle to check a report of a missing child, Rowan Morrison, and lands in the middle of a situation that both outrages him and warps his judgment. The privately owned Summerisle is wholly Pagan, in the old Celtic sense. Its society centers on the concept of fertility and appeasement of the sun God, so as to guarantee a good crop of famous Summerisle apples. Bawdy songs in mixed company are one thing, but the straight-laced Howie sees couples having sex in public, teachers teaching blasphemous sex education in the schools and naked children jumping through fires and dancing around Maypoles. Even though Rowan Morrison is listed in school records, the locals either deny her existence or infer that she's been transformed into a Hare. The cheerfully boorish Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) counters Howie's protests with a calm defense of his religion, backed up by his casual lover, schoolmarm Miss Rose (Diane Cilento). And the local strumpet Willow (Britt Ekland) further confuses Howie with an attempted seduction that may be aided by drugs, or magic. When Howie finds a dead rabbit in the missing girl's grave, he becomes convinced that Rowan Morrison has been kidnapped to await Pagan sacrifice on May Day.

According to its opening titles, Dynamite Chicken is "A contemporary probe and commentary on the mores and maladies of our age, with schtick, bits, pieces, girls, some hamburger, a little hair, a lady, some fellas, some religious stuff, and a lot of other things." That's as good a way as any to describe this chaotic, rambling montage featuring contributions from many of the movers and shakers of the peace and love generation of the late 1960s.

The film opens with comedian Richard Pryor talking to the camera in an urban schoolyard. He provides the film with whatever focus it has, popping up every few minutes to talk about some topic or other. Dynamite Chicken features interviews, skits by the comedy troupe the Ace Trucking Company, poems, man on the street interviews, a lot of old film clips, and even more photographs, all edited together at such a breakneck pace that it's hard to keep your mind focused in any one direction for very long.

Among those who manage to make themselves heard above the din: Sha Na Na perform music from the 1950s; Paul Krassner talks about the different kinds of violence and other political issues; Al Goldstein and Jim Buckley discuss their then-new magazine Screw; Michael O'Donoghue reads a funny bit about a stripping nun; Tuli Kupferberg performs a bit of guerrilla theater with his group, the Revolting Theater; Marshall Efron applies a policeman's truncheon to a melon to show what can happen to a protester's head; John Lennon and Yoko Ono explain the point of their infamous "bed-in." Also seen, but to less clear purpose, are Andy Warhol, Ondine, Ron Carey, Joan Baez, Peter Max, and Al Kooper.

Early one morning, Alain Marecaux awoke to the sound of sirens at his rural home. The police instantly arrested him and his wife under suspicion of their involvement in an underground paedophilia ring. They ransacked his home looking for evidence and quickly separated him from his two sons and daughter.
From that moment on he was subjected to the wrath of prejudice police officers and the accusative nature of a power hungry young judge. He found himself imprisoned for a crime he never committed, with the injustice he suffered culminating in numerous suicide attempts, the breakup of his family and the loss of his job. Guilty depicts this farce of an investigation, exposing that 'innocent until proven guilty' isn't necessarily always the mandate adhered to by the authorities.

A romantic drama based on the poem of the same name by the great Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov. "Ashik-Kerib" is one of Sergei Paradzhanov's most brilliant motion pictures. Ashik-Kerib was a poor man, but he possessed a heart of gold and a beautiful voice. He played the saaza, a Turkish balalaika, glorifying the ancient heroes of Turkestan at weddings and other festivities. Once he met the beautiful Magul-Megheri, the daughter of a Turkish wealthy man, and fell in love with her. But would a rich man give his daughter to a poor man? Ashik-Kerib made a vow to go for a seven-year wandering around the world, and either become rich or die. If he is not back by the appointed date, Magul-Megheri will get married to another man...
