A charming example of the "national minority" films popular in the period of the late 50's-early 60's. Set in the Bai ethnic group, a young man seeks the beautiful woman he met the year before at the Butterfly Spring festival knowing only her very common name of "Golden Flower". His search leads to lots of comic misunderstandings and wonderful musical interludes.

When it was first released in 1959 for the tenth anniversary of the foundation of the People's Republic, Five Golden Flowers celebrated Chinese Socialist modernization, agricultural collectivization, and women's liberation through a boy- meets-girl(s) love story amongst the Bai people. The beautiful scenery, romantic love songs, and buoyant mood captured the hearts of audiences nationwide.
