On 26 april 1986, a beautiful spring day, Anya and Piotr are celebrating their marriage at Pripiat, a few kilometres from Chernobyl. Little Valery and his father Alexei, a physicist at the power station in Chernobyl, plant an apple tree. Nikolai, the forest warden, makes his rounds in the surrounding forests. Then the alarm goes off at the nuclear power station and Piotr is drafted in to help put out the fire. He never returns. As a cloud of radioactive waste seeps from the stricken power station, poisoning the surrounding landscape, the local inhabitants are brutally evacuated. Alexei, forced to keep silent by the authorities, prefers to disappear.
Ten years later, Pripiat is a ghost town, a hideous modern Pompeii which is visited only by tourists with a taste for the bizarre. Anya now works here as a tourist guide, whilst Valery continues to look for his father and Nikolai strives to cultivate his poisoned garden...
