Pilot Frank Towns (James Stewart) and assistant Lew Moran (Richard Attenborough) run into a sandstorm while ferrying passengers from a remote Saharan oil well. Forced down way off their scheduled course, with no means of communication, the group is in big trouble. The bitter Towns blames himself for two fatalities and one serious injury, a young Italian (Gabrielle Tinti). The survivors include an English Army Captain Harris (Peter Finch) and his insolent Sergeant (Ronald Fraser), a foreman suffering from a nervous breakdown (Ernest Borgnine) and the doctor in charge (Christian Marquand), an accountant (Dan Duryea), and three drillers, an American (George Kennedy), a Mexican (Alex Montoya) and a caustic cockney (Ian Bannen). As Captain Harris debates trying to walk a hundred miles across the sand, it comes to Lew Moran's attention that another passenger, Heinrich Dorfmann (Hardy Kruger) is an aircraft designer, and has the idea that a smaller aircraft could be easily assemble! d from the wreckage of the old one. This wild plan seems at least a hope, but Towns won't listen to it ... because he hates the slide-rule, pushbutton future Dorfmann represents. Anthony (Cary Grant) is a British naval officer who landed in Spain during the Napoleonic wars to make contact with Spanish forces. His mission is to prevent a Spanish cannon, the largest in the world, from falling into the hands of the French. Anthony wants to take it out of Spain, but the leader of the guerrilla forces, Miguel (played by Frank Sinatra) wants to take the gun to Avila and blast the French out of that city and out of Spain. They are able to work together and achieve this, in spite of a battling between themselves for the love of Juana (Sophia Loren).

The year is 1999, and the world is on the brink of a nuclear confrontation. Claire Tourneur (Solveig Dommartin), a disenchanted young bohemian, is involved in a lackluster relationship with novelist Eugene Fitzpatrick (Sam Neill). Driving across Europe on her way home from a decadent party, she has a car accident that involves her with two bank robbers, Chico and Raymond (Chick Ortega and Eddy Mitchell). Claire ends up agreeing to transport their heist to Paris in exchange for a cut of the proceeds. Then she meets Sam Farber (William Hurt), an enigmatic traveler who steals some of the loot from her car before going on his mysterious way. Enraged and intrigued, Claire sets off to track him down. Her quest takes her around the world in a cosmopolitan blur of languages, cultures and high-tech computer images, ending in the Australian outback, where Sam's father (Max von Sydow) has a laboratory.

Sam, it develops, has been using a special camera to collect images from his global trek. His father is working on a process that will enable Sam's mother (Jeanne Moreau) to "see" these images, even though she is blind. Convinced by an absence of radio signals that a nuclear holocaust has taken place, everyone devotes themselves to helping with Mr. Farber's experiments. Their work bears fruit; the machine not only gives sight to the blind but also allows users to view their dreams on screen. These beautiful images, however, prove dangerously addictive.

"Doc" Riedenschneider (played by Sam Jaffe) is a criminal who became a underworld legend because of his methodically planned heists. After being released from prison, he wants to put one of his old plans - robbery of jewellery store - into action, but he needs personnel and someone to finance the operation. After being approached by Alonzo P. Emmerich (played by Louis Calhern), a lawyer with criminal connections, "Doc" begins assembling his crew. The safecracker is Louis Ciavelli (played by Anthony Caruso), who accepts the job because he wants to feed his family. The "muscleman" is Dix! Handley (played by Sterling Hayden), violent street mugger who wants to pay his gambling debts, and the getaway driver is Gus Minissi (played by James Whitmore), hunchback and Dix's only friend. The heist, although methodically executed, goes bad, and in the end, the criminals themselves are in danger of being robbed.

Upon witnessing what must be a brothel, he calls the station and organizes a raid, transporting all the 'ladies' to the jail. Fired, he goes to a bar to drink, is befriended by Irma, beats up her pimp, and finds he is now Irma's new pimp. Nester's doesn't like the thought of his girl seeing other men, so comes up with a plan.

Cast a Giant Shadow is the true-life story of the American soldier David "Mickey" Marcus. In 1949, the British pulled out of the newly formed country Israel, leaving it poorly defended. (The real-life Marcus did notable duty in WWII, including parachuting during D-Day even though he wasn't trained as a paratrooper.) In Israel, he finds quite a challenge in negotiating the personalities and conflicts involved from an American daredevil pilot (Frank Sinatra) to a wise politician to an attractive freedom fighter. To top that off, Israel suddenly finds itself involved in a full-scale war, giving Marcus and his troops their toughest test.

In his quest for meaning, all the director manages to find is meaningless sex and lots of metaphors for isolation and abandonment: fog, open doors, empty landscapes.

A police Lieutenant goes about his daily tasks of investigating homicides, but is more interested in pursuing his vices. He has accumulated a massive debt betting on baseball, and he keeps doubling to try to recover. His bookies are beginning to get agitated. The Lieutenant does copious amounts of drugs, cavorts with prostitutes, and uses his status to take advantage of teenage girls. While investigating a nun's rape, he begins to reflect on his lifestyle.

The film begins in the mid-21st century, long after a virus has forced the surviving members of the human race to live underground. Bruce Willis stars as James Cole, a convict who is sent to 1996, immediately before the virus' release, on a fact-finding mission. Time-travel technology is apparently not quite perfect, however; he lands in 1990 and ends up in a mental hospital, where he is subjected to the ramblings of fellow patient Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt). He tries to explain his mission to Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeline Stowe); she doubts him, of course, but his ability to predict future events and seemingly hop around in time eventually convince her that he might be telling that truth, and that they must try to stop the oncoming plague.
