A summary of Alexandra is almost useless, as the film is less about story and more about marking the emotional footprints of its characters. The essential "plot", as it were, is about a Russian grandmother (Galina Vishnevskaya, a famous Russian opera singer) visiting her grandson Denis (Vasily Shevtsov), a sergeant in the Russian army. He's stationed at a remote Chechen outpost, and from the moment Alexandra arrives, she is out of place. The army base is barren and secluded, a closed system with its own code and structure. This visitor creates an immediate juxtaposition between the outside and the inside, and Sokurov patiently tracks the old woman as she explores the camp, talking to soldiers, and even going beyond its perimeter to the local market, where she befriends some of the occupied people.

Saturday Morning Pictures Vol.4: Runaway Railway (1966), Junket 89 (1970) DVD9

Here it is – the extremely rare, final volume of Network's Saturday Morning Pictures series that consisted of double-bills of movies by the Children's Film Foundation.
This volume is one of the best in the short-lived Saturday Morning Pictures series and features the usual combination of one black & white film, one colour film and a couple of bonus episodes of The Magnificient 6 1/2. The movies are Runaway Railway from 1965 and Junket 89 from 1970. Both movies, as what has always seemed to be the case in these releases, feature actors who have connections to Doctor Who!

Man Hunt (1941) DVD9

Captain Alan Thorndike (Walter Pidgeon), a famous English big-game hunter, gets Hitler in the sights of his hunting rifle at Berchtesgaden and pulls the trigger on an empty chamber. Loading his rifle he is distracted and then set upon by one of Hitler's guards. Brought before a SS Major (George Sanders) who happens to be a fellow hunter, Thorndike insists that his actions were simply in the spirit of a 'sporting stalk' and he had no intention of shooting the Fuhrer.
The Nazis torture Thorndike, in an attempt to get him to sign a confession that he was plotting to assassinate Hitler for the British government, in order to achieve a propaganda coup. Thorndike refuses and the Nazis stage an 'accident' by pushing him off a cliff. Thorndike survives and returns to England but is pursued by the Major, posing as an Englishman, Quive-Smith, and various Gestapo thugs. He is befriended by Jerry Joan Bennett, a tart with a heart, and attempts to disappear, so that the Nazi propaganda machine cannot implicate him and, by association, the British government.

There are certain movies that go beyond the normal, ever beyond the status of classic. Films such as this hold a place in the pantheon of cinema no matter how many decades past since they where first seen. One such film is without any doubt Double Indemnity. While many may see this as just one of thousands of crime thrillers is is so much more. It defines the genre film noir like few films could. The Irving Klaw Classics: Volume 1-4 (1951-1956) 4 x DVD5

Irving Klaw was a photographer and filmmaker who rose to prominence during the 1950's because of his glamour girls pin ups and fetish/bondage shorts features. His tow most famous films are Varietease and Teaserama. Both films featured his most famous model Bettie Page. Klaw by the end of the 1950's he would leave fetish/bondage business after being investigated by the United States government who essentially labeled him a pornographer. Reportedly while he was being investigated by the government Klaw destroyed about 80% of his negatives to avoid jail time. The only surviving images and films that remain today are because Paula Klaw secretly hide some of Irving's best images/films.

A Woman of Paris (1923) was the first film Chaplin made for United Artists Film Corporation, which he founded with his friends Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D. W. Griffith. It was Charlie Chaplin's dramatic film debut, an attempt to prove he could do more than comedy and didn't need to star in a film to appeal to his audience. The sophisticated melodrama stars Chaplin's onetime lover, Edna Purviance, as Marie St. Clair.

The film opens with Marie planning to escape suffocating parents and her provincial village for Paris with her betrothed, Jean Millet (Carl Miller). But the sudden death of Jean's father keeps him from meeting Marie at the train station. The deeply wounded Marie boards the train for Paris alone. By the next scene, a year later, Marie has become the mistress of the city's wealthiest bachelor - and most notorious rake Pierre Revel (Adolphe Menjou) who lavishes Marie with material things, but is promised in marriage to an heiress.

A year later she accidently meets Jean, who has come to Paris with his mother to study art. Suddenly, Jean re-enters her life, and Marie must choose between her lost true love and the lifestyle she has become accustomed to.
