4 luni, 3 saptamani si 2 zile / 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days 2007
In just his second feature film, Romanian director Cristian Mungiu wasn't shy about tackling a challenge.
While the idea and process of the abortion itself is the driving force of the movie, as cliche as it may sound, it's not what the movie is really 'about'.

Set in 1987 at the tail end of the Ceausescu dictatorship in Romania, "4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days" concerns a young woman seeking an abortion in an authoritarian state that has all but outlawed the procedure. As if the basic subject wasn't thorny enough, writer/director Mungiu also chose to make the young woman rather difficult to like, or at least difficult to fully sympathize with. Gabita (Laura Vasiliu) is passive, forgetful, flighty, and relies almost entirely on her friend Otilia (Anamaria Marinca) to negotiate all of the details of a complex (and illegal) deal. Safe in the security of being the "unreliable one" in the relationship, Gabi exploits Otilia's courage and conscientiousness, with harrowing repercussions for both of them.

Director: Cristian Mungiu
Cast: Anamaria Marinca, Laura Vasiliu, Vlad Ivanov, Alexandru Potocean, Luminita Gheorghiu

Dietrich & von Sternberg in Hollywood: Morocco (1930), Dishonored (1931), Shanghai Express (1932), Blonde Venus (1932), The Scarlet Empress (1934), The Devil is a Woman (1935) 6 x Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

Dietrich & von Sternberg in Hollywood
She would be revered as one of the most famous sex symbols of the twentieth century. He would become renowned as one of early sound cinema's most accomplished visionaries—and then reviled for his grueling techniques and disparagement of actors. She was Marlene Dietrich and he was Josef von Sternberg, a German actress and a New York raised, Austrian born emigre who would, with seven features create one of the most impressive cinematic collaborations ever accomplished in their medium. The esteemed Criterion Collection brings together, for the first time in one stellar box-set, the six Hollywood features they made together from 1930-1935 which brought them together and tore them apart by the end of their working relationship.

Throughout the six films in the set -- Morocco (1930), Dishonored (1931), Shanghai Express (1932), Blonde Venus (1932), The Scarlet Empress (1934) and The Devil is a Woman (1935) -- von Sternberg and Dietrich show off their range, covering melodrama, tragedy, thrills, a touch of comedy, and plenty of romance (almost every one finds Dietrich with multiple suitors). Crediting von Sternberg alone with the "creation" of Dietrich's image arguably undermines her talents, but it's safe to say that their works leave both of them looking good, as Dietrich gamely meets each one of von Sternberg's new challenges, and von Sternberg's vision becomes increasingly elaborate.

Charlie Chaplin: The Essanay Comedies (1915-1916) 2 x Blu-Ray BFI

Charlie Chaplin The Essanay Comedies
Across the course of just one year, Charlie Chaplin went from a popular stage actor to screen megastar and box office draw with the films he made at Mack Sennett's Keystone Company. Keystone turned out fast-paced, broad slapstick comedy shorts which delighted audiences of their day but often look a little crude by modern standards. Nevertheless, Chaplin shone out amongst his contemporaries and when his contract came up for renewal at the end of the year, he demanded a higher wage of $1,000 a year. When Sennett refused this demand, Chaplin negotiated an even higher wage of $1,250 a year (plus a $10,000 signing bonus) with the Essanay Company. Chaplin's move was not only financially beneficial but also crucial in allowing him the greater creative freedom to refine his art. Though the Essanay films are now seen as a transitional period for Chaplin, it is quickly apparent when watching the films chronologically that he is going from strength to strength and, to audiences who were not aware that even better was to come, the films on the BFI's new complete overview of Chaplin's Essanay work were considered the gold standard of screen comedy at the time.

A Boy and His Dog 1975
The plot of this film is set in Arizona in the year 2024 A.D. The world had been devastated by nuclear war seventeen years ago, and the surface of the Earth is turned into desert, roamed by various drifters in search of food, drink and shelter. One of them is Vic (played by a very young and rosy-cheeked Don Johnson), eighteen-year-old boy whose only companion is Blood (voice by Tim McIntire), dog with whom he has telepathic connection. Blood's instincts, wisdom, knowledge experience help Vic in his everyday search for food, but so far Vic can't find the only thing on his mind - a girl. Finally, two of them stumble on a girl in the form of young Quilla June Holmes (played by Susan Benton) and rescue her from homicidal rapists and mutants. After a night of passionate love Quilla disappears and Vic, against Blood's better judgement, goes looking for her in the underground, where some remnants of civilisation survived and turned into grotesque version of ultraconservative America...

Science Is Fiction: 23 Films by Jean Painleve (1928-1960) 3 x DVD9 Criterion Collection

Science Is Fiction 23 Films by Jean Painleve
Jean Painleve was a film director, critic, theorist, and animator, yet his interests and studies also extended to mathematics, medicine, and zoology. Amazingly, all these disparate strands came together in a groundbreaking, decades-spanning artistic career. Operating under the credo: Science is fiction, Painleve forged his own unique cinematic path, creating countless short films for both the viewing public and the scientific community. Moreover, he was also one of the first filmmakers to take his camera underwater. Surreal, otherworldly documents of marine life, these films transformed sea horses, octopi, and mollusks into delicate dancers in their own floating ballets.

The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) 2xDVD9 and Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

The Magnificent Ambersons 1942
The Magnificent Ambersons is based on Booth Tarkington's Pulitzer Prize–winning 1918 novel of the same name. It tells the story of the downfall of the titular upper-class family. Isabel Amberson (Dolores Costello) is being courted by inventor Eugene Morgan (Joseph Cotten) but an embarrassing incident turns Isabel away into the arms of stick-in-the-mud Wilbur Minafer, who she soon marries.

Jumping forward a number of years, the now widower Eugene comes back to town and attends a party put on by the Ambersons where he meets Isabel's spoiled son George (Tim Holt), who is approaching adulthood and instantly falls for Eugene's daughter Lucy (Anne Baxter). She finds George's arrogance strangely endearing and the two begin a hesitant relationship, but all the while George becomes increasingly unhappy with the attention Eugene is giving his mother, particularly after his father dies. Indeed, Eugene and Isabel begin to rekindle their old flame, much to George's anger.

The insolent young man does his best to intervene over the years, but, in the meantime, the Amberson family stock begins to decline whilst the Morgan family fortunes rapidly increase as the industrialisation of the town (and country) develops.

The Phantom of the Opera 1925
Lon Chaney, the man of a thousand faces, stars in this original film adaptation of Gaston Leyroux's celebrated novel The Phantom of the Opera. From his home in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House, the disfigured Phantom haunts the operagoers and becomes legend. It leads to tragic consequences.
