One of the very few films that plunges you into a world of characters with the same feeling of richness that you experience from a 19th century novel. The beautiful courtesan Garance (Arletty) is loved by the mime Baptiste (Jean-Louis Barrault) and the brilliant actor Frederic (Pierre Brasseur), but she finds herself compromised by her association with the nihilistic criminal Lacenaire (Marcel Herrand), and giving herself to a wealthy nobleman whom she doesn't love is the only way out of her predicament. That's just the outline of the plot! The film is in two parts with an intermission; it beautifully evokes the bright world of Paris in the last century, and the acting is superb and touching and funny. But most of all, Children of Paradise is about the theater, those who act in it and write for it, and especially those who go to it, but can only afford to sit in the cheap seats, way up in the balcony.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eighth Dimension! was an underground hit in 1984, later gathering a cultish following.

Money Movers (1978) DVD9

Security firm specialised in the transport of money and other valuables becomes the target of repeated hits by armed robbers. Between 1975 and 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime caused the death of some 1.8 million people, representing one-quarter of the population of Cambodia. Kaing Guek Eav, better known as Duch, was in charge at M13, a Khmer Rouge-controlled prison, for four years before being appointed by the Angkar ("the Organisation", a faceless and omnipresent entity which reigned unopposed over the destiny of an entire people) to the S21 centre in Phnom Penh. As party secretary, he commanded from 1975 to 1979 the Khmer Rouge killing machine in which at least 12,280 people perished, according to the remaining archives. But how many others disappeared, "crushed and reduced to dust", with no trace of them ever being found? In 2009, Duch became the first leader of the Khmer Rouge organisation to be brought before an international criminal justice court. Rithy Panh records his unadorned words, without any trimmings, in the isolation of a face-to-face encounter. At the same time, he sets it into perspective wit h archive pictures and eye-witness accounts of survivors. As the narrative unfolds, the infernal machine of a system of destruction of humanity implacably emerges, through a manic description of the minutiae of its mechanisms.

Rithy Panh brings this story into his native land -The little Cambodian child from the ricefields, who's responsible for guarding the prisoner, is already sucked in by the Khmer Rouge ideology. Across the border, in Vietnam, war is raging and US fighters fly over his country to bomb Vietnam. Will the child be able not to kill the black man - the enemy?

Gentlemen of Fortune is about a kindergarten director named Troshkin who looks like a twin brother of a criminal with a nickname Docent (meaning "associate professor" in Russian). Docent, assisted by two other felons, steals the golden helmet of Alexander the Great at the site of an archaeological excavation. The three criminals are caught by the militia (the Soviet Union's police) but without having the stolen helmet in them. An archaeologist professor accidentally meets Troshkin in a bus and upon seeing the striking similarity between him and Docent, suggests to the militia putting Troshkin in prison as a replacement of Docent. The latter one is separated from his gang and put in another prison so Troshkin begins his mission to wring the location of the helmet from the rest of Docent's gang. Pretending to be a real convict proves to be a tough task for the amiable and well-educated kindergarten teacher, but and his kindness and pedagogical experience have an unexpected effect on th e hardened criminals...

Federico Fellini's Intervista is, like so many of the Italian auteur's films, above all else, a love letter to the intoxicating power of cinema.
Fellini, playing himself, is at Cinecitta shooting an adaptation of Franz Kafka's America and being interviewed by a Japanese film crew who want to capture life on the set. Fellini reminisces about his first trip to Cinecitta as a young journalist sent to interview an imperious starlet, a trip that is dramatized with Sergio Rubini (The Talented Mr. Ripley) as the young Fellini and Paola Liguori as the star. Back at modern Cinecitta, the director's assistants (these crew members also play themselves) scan the subway for "Fellini-esque" faces for the Kafka film, and shoot screen tests. Fellini's leading man Marcello Mastroianni drops by, and the gang heads to Anita Ekberg's house, where the pair of stars watches their famous scenes from La Dolce Vita projected on a screen that Mastroianni conjures from nowhere. Fellini manages to finish the America film despite rain and an attack from TV-antenna wielding Indians.

The plot of the film begins in 1572. After decades of endless civil war it seems that one of many feuding clans is finally going to get on top of everybody else and thus unite the nation. This clan is Takeda, led by Shingen (played by Tatsuya Nakadai), charismatic warlord known for his great military skill and reputation of invincibility. While besieging one of the remaining enemy strongholds Shingen is shot and mortally wounded. Fearing that the news would demoralise troops and give morale boost to rival clans led by Oda Nobunaga (played by Daisuke Ryu) and Tokugawa Ieyasu (played by Masayuki Yui), Shingen's generals decide to hide their master's demise from the public. Shingen's brother and part-time double Nobukado (played by Tsutomu Yamazaki) had already found a solution for this problem in the form of petty thief (played by Tatsuya Nakadai) who just happened to be physically identical to the deceased warlord. Thief becomes Kagemusha, full-time impersonator of Shingen and gets co ached by the small circle of Shingen's closest and most trusted associates. At Kagemusha is reluctant to take this role and he, like many people around him, doubts his ability to impersonate the charismatic warlord. His presence infuriates Shingen's son Katsuyori (played by Kenichi Hagiwara), whose rise to power was postponed by the impersonation scheme. The war erupts again and Kagemusha is forced to put his impersonation abilities to the test. When his presence alone shifts the outcome of the important battle, Kagemusha is finally convinced that he actually be Shingen. He gradually wins the hearts and minds of his subjects in a way real Shingen never could, oblivious to the fact that he could jeopardise both himself and Takeda clan if he forgets who he really is.

At 16, he swore never to love again after his affair with a woman 12 years his senior was discovered. But in Munich he becomes smitten with Clarissa Lichtblau (Salome Kammer), a cellist. On his first day at the Conservatory, Hermann meets many of the characters that will make up the main cast of this complicated series. Some are fellow musicians or composers, but there are also filmmakers, and later, writers and actors.
Nazism, war, and the Holocaust are things from which this younger generation of Germans cannot escape. Initially they seem disgusted or disinterested in the Nazis, but history, particularly on the personal level, catches up with them.
Each of the 13 episodes focuses on a different character in the group, while the story of Hermann and the others continues to thread through. The series is a complicated tapestry of personal stories, expertly woven together.

This film focuses mainly upon the handsome young prince, who, just after the arrival of the self-proclaimed princess, sets off on a quest to find a real princess to marry. During his quest he encounters a foolish, superficial princess, a princess who challenges her poor suitors with an impossible riddle to get rid of them and a princess devoted to art. Returning home empty-handed and broken-hearted, the prince realizes a real princess has been under his nose all along in the form of the young girl who arrived on his doorstep. Beautiful scenery, a wonderful storyline and great acting combine to make an enchanting film. Highly recommended for those who love a good fairytale.

Rather than focus on well-known national leaders, the series looks at a modest family trying to cope with rapidly changing circumstances.
Central person is Maria, who we see growing from a 17 year old girl to an old woman, and her family. The family, like the rest of the German people live through the crises after WW-I, the rise and fall of Nazism and WW-II, and the rebuilding and the following prosperity of the village (as a symbol for the whole country) after WW II.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) DVD9

The untimely death of a junior Senator (from an unnamed American state) sends political boss Jim Taylor (Edward Arnold) into a momentary panic. Taylor needs the votes in the Senate to back a pork barrel project that will line his pockets. He controls the state's Governor, Hubert Hopper (Guy Kibbee) and the state's beloved senior Senator, Joseph Paine (Claude Rains), who suggest a popular citizen and local Boy Ranger leader, Jefferson Smith (James Stewart) to fill the empty position. Smith is humbled and proud to be under the wing of Paine, who had known Smith's late father, a crusading journalist. The patriotic Smith drinks in the sights in the nation's Capitol and reports to the Senate. He is hit hard upon his arrival by the Washington Press Corps, including reporter Diz Moore (Thomas Mitchell), who paint him as a naive fool in the newspapers. With the encouragement of Paine and with help from his cynical assistant Clarissa Saunders (Jean Arthur), Smith begins to draft a bill to est ablish a Boy's Camp in his state. Unfortunately, Smith's bill conflicts with Taylor's plans for pork politics; Taylor turns all of his might against Smith, including Senator Paine. Smith sees the enormity of the forces against him, but he is determined to get the truth out to the people of his state. Saunders is falling in love with Smith, and she, Diz, and others sympathetic to the effort, including the President of the Senate (Harry Carey), help Smith in his last-ditch effort to clear his name.
