But with the help of an English-speaking, Anglo-Indian named Edith (Vicky Redwood), Aarti becomes more confident, leaving her conservative relatives confused over their place in her new, modern life.

There are moments in time in which great artists unite creatively and present the world with a unique gift through their creative riches combined. The collaborations contained within this rewarding collection are fascinating reminders of this aspect of the film medium.

Two icons of cinema had one of the finest of artistic collaborations: acclaimed Italian neo-realism director Roberto Rossellini and one of Hollywood's most cherished actors, Ingrid Bergman; a creatively dynamic duo and a terrific team in making movies of merit.

Together, Bergman and Rossellini crafted some of their finest motion-pictures, but these works of art were often overlooked by audiences. The works contained within this Criterion Collection release represent some of these efforts between acclaimed director Roberto Rossellini and actor Ingrid Bergman. The three films presented are Stromboli, Europe '51, and Journey to Italy. Each film represents something uniquely individualistic and is only a portion of their collaborations together during their artistically unified and most successful years throughout the 1950's.

During World War I, American pilot Jerry Young and his aviation unit are transferred to France. Henry Crocker, who is not a proficient pilot, is left behind on Jerry's advice. On arrival in France, Jerry and his buddy Mike Richards report to British Major Dunham who assigns them to fly reconnaissance missions over enemy territory while their tailgunner photographs the area. Time passes and all of Jerry's observers are killed. The growing number of deaths greatly affects Jerry, despite the fact that he is hailed as a hero.
After the loss of another observer, Crocker reaches Young in France to become his co-pilot. Despite the many winning missions, the men continue to strongly dislike each other. Young, growing obsessed with the casualties of the war, begins to drink heavily.

Federico Fellini’s Intervista (1987) DVD9

Federico Fellini's Intervista is, like so many of the Italian auteur's films, above all else, a love letter to the intoxicating power of cinema.
Fellini, playing himself, is at Cinecitta shooting an adaptation of Franz Kafka's America and being interviewed by a Japanese film crew who want to capture life on the set. Fellini reminisces about his first trip to Cinecitta as a young journalist sent to interview an imperious starlet, a trip that is dramatized with Sergio Rubini (The Talented Mr. Ripley) as the young Fellini and Paola Liguori as the star. Back at modern Cinecitta, the director's assistants (these crew members also play themselves) scan the subway for "Fellini-esque" faces for the Kafka film, and shoot screen tests. Fellini's leading man Marcello Mastroianni drops by, and the gang heads to Anita Ekberg's house, where the pair of stars watches their famous scenes from La Dolce Vita projected on a screen that Mastroianni conjures from nowhere. Fellini manages to finish the America film despite rain and an attack from TV-antenna wielding Indians.

Kagemusha The Shadow Warrior (1980) 2 x DVD9 Criterion Collection

The plot of the film begins in 1572. After decades of endless civil war it seems that one of many feuding clans is finally going to get on top of everybody else and thus unite the nation. This clan is Takeda, led by Shingen (played by Tatsuya Nakadai), charismatic warlord known for his great military skill and reputation of invincibility. While besieging one of the remaining enemy strongholds Shingen is shot and mortally wounded. Fearing that the news would demoralise troops and give morale boost to rival clans led by Oda Nobunaga (played by Daisuke Ryu) and Tokugawa Ieyasu (played by Masayuki Yui), Shingen's generals decide to hide their master's demise from the public. Shingen's brother and part-time double Nobukado (played by Tsutomu Yamazaki) had already found a solution for this problem in the form of petty thief (played by Tatsuya Nakadai) who just happened to be physically identical to the deceased warlord. Thief becomes Kagemusha, full-time impersonator of Shingen and gets co ached by the small circle of Shingen's closest and most trusted associates. At Kagemusha is reluctant to take this role and he, like many people around him, doubts his ability to impersonate the charismatic warlord. His presence infuriates Shingen's son Katsuyori (played by Kenichi Hagiwara), whose rise to power was postponed by the impersonation scheme. The war erupts again and Kagemusha is forced to put his impersonation abilities to the test. When his presence alone shifts the outcome of the important battle, Kagemusha is finally convinced that he actually be Shingen. He gradually wins the hearts and minds of his subjects in a way real Shingen never could, oblivious to the fact that he could jeopardise both himself and Takeda clan if he forgets who he really is.
