Deadbeat mom Wanda (Barbara Loden) cannot raise the will to take care of her children or her house in the coal fields, and allows a judge to grant her husband (Jerome Thier) a divorce and full custody. Wanda drifts on the road, sleeping with any man that picks her up or buys her a meal. Here we have Volume 2 of Network's Saturday Morning Pictures series that feature movies produced by the Children's Film Foundation (later renamed the Children's Film And Television Foundation). This volume is a corker featuring an ace footie film called Cup Fever that stars a very young and non-sexualised (for a change) Susan George with Bernard Cribbins and David Lodge along with some guest appearances from some top-class British football/soccer legends that include George Best, Nobby Stiles and Denis Law. The second movie on the disc is a slightly gritty crime caper that stars future Spandau Ballet legend Gary Kemp along with Roy Dotrice and the ever-watchable Liz Fraser.

La Strada is Federico Fellini's moving masterpiece that explores the soul's eternal conflict between the heart and mind. Zampano (Anthony Quinn) is a cruel, traveling carnival strongman who buys his assistant, a simple minded young woman named Gelsomina (Giulietta Masina), from her poverty-stricken family. Gelsomina is innocent and childlike (Masina's exquisite performance is as comic as it is heartbreaking). She does Zampano's bidding without question or resistance, even though he is abusive to her. He abandons her in the street to spend the night with a woman. He lashes her with a tree branch when she misquotes her introductory lines. He forces her to steal from a convent. Yet, she remains faithful and uncomplaining. But soon, their fragile relationship is disrupted when Gelsomina meets The Fool (Richard Basehart), a witty circus clown. He mercilessly taunts the oafish Zampano, who can only react with violence. Nevertheless, he is kind and reassuring to the gentle, suffering Gelsomina, offering her a means to leave Zampano. It is the rivalry over her that precipitates the film's inevitable tragedy.

Although released anonymously, as was the custom with all films produced by the Italian Navy, La Nave Bianca is the first feature-length effort directed by Roberto Rossellini; it is also very much the work of its co-writer and supervisor Francesco De Robertis. The film combines a documentary look at the Italian Navy during World War II with newsreel combat footage and a scripted love story performed by non-professional actors. A Fascist sailor, wounded in battle, is transferred to a hospital ship. While recuperating, he falls in love with the young Red Cross nurse who cares for him, not knowing that she is also his longtime pen pal. One of the film's (uncredited) camera operators, Mario Bava, who would later direct such classic horror films as Black Sunday and Lisa and the Devil.

Elegy of the Land contains two shorts by Alexander Sokurov about the significance of the land to Russia, where it has an almost spiritual meaning. Both films are embued with the director's signature moody melancholy.
"Maria", made in memory of Russian peasant Maria Semionovna Voinova, serves as not only a requiem for a hard-working woman but also for a way of life. Maria grew flax, and after her death, her secrets and methods of working in the fields were lost.
"The Last Day of a Rainy Summer" was shot in 1978 on a Russian collective farm called a kolkhoze, which was responsible for supplying agricultural products for other parts of the country. "Last Day" captures the daily routines of this farming community, a lifestyle fading even as it was being chronicled.
