The Invaders (49th Parallel in the UK) is an excellent war drama from British director Powell, co-scripted by his longtime collaborator Pressburger. Filmed mostly in Canada, the film opens as a U-37 German submarine surfaces in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It is obliterated by RCAF bombers, but six Germans survive and march to a Hudson Bay trading post. Constructed in episodic fashion, the story shows them wandering through Canada to avoid detection. Along the way, they meet Johnnie (Olivier), a trapper filled with contempt for the Nazis; a group of German Hutterites living on a Christian collective headed by Peter (Walbrook); and Philip Armstrong Scott (Howard), a decadent novelist living in a teepee while writing about the Blackfoot Indians. With each meeting, the number of "invaders" diminishes; some are captured, others killed...

Little Sparrows (2010) DVD9

The film tells the simple story of a mom (Susan) whose cancer has returned and spread and she knows she doesn't have much time left. She wishes for a happy family get-together at Christmas, which may be the last Christmas she is able to see, certainly the last Christmas she'll be home for. Her husband James, an actor who has put his work first over the years, is the first to receive the news. As he confronts his own sadness and is told by Susan to keep it together for the sake of their daughters, they begin plans for Christmas, when the three daughters and their grandchildren will be home, and the news that will need to be shared. The film shifts and we then get the stories of each daughter, sometimes speaking directly to the camera but mostly told in reenactment. The film jumps in time between the Christmas party and the separate lives of the women, and it shifts perspective on a few events that bring excellent insight into how all three deal with the situation of their mom and her cancer.

Indifferent to Jo's feelings, Helen, evicted from her Salford flat, moves in with Peter. Her deserted daughter gets a job as a shoe clerk and rents a room, which she shares with the gentle Geoffrey, a penniless homosexual. Upon discovering that she is pregnant, Jo is disconsolate, but Geoffrey is delighted. Enthusiastically preparing for the baby's arrival, he sews a layette, visits a clinic for instruction in child care. Geoffrey even willing to marry her, but the would-be family is disrupted by the addition of Helen, who by now has broken up with Peter.

The perennial question of "artist versus authority", if the loneliness of a genius and his ability to rise above the crowd, the problems of faith and faithlessness are examined through the prism of a life story of the great Russian icon painter Andrei Rublyov. The title part was the first film role for the outstanding Russian actor Anatoly Solonitsyn who was to become a Tarkovsky actor for many years.

Ave follows Kamen (Ovanes Torosyan), a teenage art student, hitchhiking from Sofia to Rousse, a small town on the Bulgarian border to Romania. In Rousse, Kamen wants to attend the funeral of a friend from school who killed himself under unknown circumstances. On his way, Kamen meets Ave (Anjela Nedyalkova), who, as fate has it, is also hitchhiking to Rousse. At least that's what she tells him.
Once they are in a car together, Kamen is shocked when Ave begins to make up stories about him as if they have known each other all their lives. The further they travel together, the more extreme her lies become, yet although he makes clear his rising anger he can't seem to get rid of her. And beneath Kamen's conscientious surface lies a dark secret that forces viewers to reassess the comparative moral values of the two.

Traveling through rural Mexico on their way to a job in Central America, a small band of American mercenaries halts their journey to bivouac in the countryside for a few days.
