Maurice Faugel (Serge Reggiani, The Leopard) has just been released from prison. He goes to visit his friend Gilbert Varnove, has a brief conversation, and then kills Varnove. Faugel quickly snaps up some various valuables, making it look like the killing was committed by some sort of burglar. Faugel's purpose in killing Varnove was not theft, but he is a thief. He is plotting a high-stakes robbery of a wealthy man, and he's certain that nothing can go wrong. Unfortunately, things do go wrong, and Faugel suspects that someone attempted to sabotage him. He immediately suspects his close friend Silien (Jean-Paul Belmondo, Breathless), who is indeed working as an informant for the police. However, not all is as it seems. Do not assume at any point that everything has been revealed. In this world, odds are pretty high that you're standing on a rug that is about to pulled out from under you.

To celebrate MGM's 50th anniversary in 1974, producer Jack Haley, Jr. (the son of Jack Haley, who played the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz) came up with the idea of cutting together highlights from the great MGM musicals into a compilation film, which would be broadcast on television. Haley and executive producer Daniel Melnick spent months digging through the vast MGM film vaults for clippings from such classics as Singin' in the Rain, An American in Paris, and Meet Me in St. Louis, as well as less familiar gems. MGM executives liked the compilation so much that they decided to expand it into a feature film. Haley brought Gene Kelly on board as a host, and Kelly in turn was able to entice stars like Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra to introduce and provide narration for the clips.

The final result, That's Entertainment!, was a smash hit, adored by critics and a generation of moviegoers whose only access to the great musicals of the past was the occasional art-house revival or mangled television broadcast. That's Entertainment! not only popularized the retrospective compilation genre but tapped into a nostalgia for Old Hollywood that has been a pop culture staple ever since. The film spawned three sequels — That's Entertainment, Part II in 1976, That's Dancing! in 1985, and That's Entertainment III in 1994.

The film is based on a six-part series of novels written by legendary author Stephen King, who agreed to release the story once a month for six months so that it would force him to deliver a piece which otherwise may not have been written. Writer/Director Frank Darabont, fresh from the overwhelming success of The Shawshank Redemption a few years earlier (another King adaptation), was so keen on using this story as a basis for his next script that he basically agreed to write a screenplay before he had read the last parts of the series.

The story surrounds a prison block in Louisiana dubbed The Green Mile; a series of death-row waiting rooms separated by a faded green strip of linoleum floor in between. Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) is a veteran prison guard who has been numbed by years of watching hardened criminals brought to justice in the cruelest of fashion. Things change when he is introduced to a man named John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a larger than life black man who has been accused and convicted of killing two young girls on a farm. Coffey might be large in stature but he has the mind of a child, coupled with an extraordinary healing power that captures the mind of Paul Edgecomb and the other prison guards on the Mile.

In a South American jungle, swarthy bandits drive wildcat oilmen Jeff Dawson and Dutch Peterson (Gary Cooper & Ward Bond) off their leased drilling operation, blowing up their rig when they can't pay extortion money. In Eugene Green's third full-length film set around 1980, it is Baroque that links two symmetrical stories on the Paris bridge that gives the film its title. Pascal (Michaux, always to be seen in Green's films) is in the last year of his literature studies, unmotivated and listless, but his thesis - and his relationship with the ambitious Christine - suffer as a result of his obsession for the poetry of Michelangelo. Classical vocalist Sarah (another beautiful role by Natacha Regnier) suffers under the verbal abuse of the conductor - known as 'The Unnameable' - with whom she is working on recording Monteverdi's Lamento della ninfa and is imprisoned in an unsatisfying relationship. An impossible love unfolds between the two of them in Baroque dialogues. Strangely enough, this love is moving, elevated, artistic and humorously absurd.

A unique musical biographical films on Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 -1750) directed with brilliance by French New Wave enthusiast Jean-Marie Straub, a Frenchman who moved to Germany when he was 25. It's co-written by Straub and his wife Daniele Huillet.
"Chronicle" tells the story of Johann Sebastian Bach through the words of his second wife, Anna Magdalena. Straub/Huillet mix actual historical material with voice-over from Anna's "diary" to stitch together a narrative which covers the period from Bach's marriage to Anna to his death (1721-1750).
The film is only nominally a biopic, however. Anna, in a strictly functional voice-over, rattles off the major events of her husband's life: his prestigious appointment in Leipzig, his growing blindness, and the many tragic deaths of their children (Bach had twelve children with Anna; eight of them died by the age of five). These historical facts, however, serve only as an excuse to propel the film from one performance to another, and it is the music which is always at the center of "Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach".
