The Goddess: How I Fell in Love / Boginya: kak ya polyubila / Богиня: Как я полюбила (2004) DVD9

Boginya kak ya polyubila 2004
Known for her ethereal voice, stream-of-consciousness language, and retro blonde glamour, Renata Litvinova has been something of a mass-media icon for over a decade thanks to her roles in several films by Kira Muratova and her frequent television appearances, often as a fashion commentator. She is also a VGIK-trained screenwriter, and has written or co-written a handful of feature films. She recently established an international presence with her role in Peter Greenaway's The Tulse Luper Suitcases, Part Three: From Sark to Finish (2003). The Goddess is Litvinova's debut as a director of acted cinema, and it showcases all of these personae — writer, actress, cult figure, Muratova protegee — in ways that illustrate both the drawbacks and advantages of being one's own muse.

In The Goddess, Litvinova plays Faina, an eccentric detective whose unorthodox methods have earned her both admiration and contempt among her colleagues. Faina's partner is hopelessly in love with her, but Faina is either aloof, uninterested, or afraid to reciprocate. The film starts off with an investigation into the disappearance of a little girl...

Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014) DVD9

Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014) DVD9
Two movie-obsessed cousins from Israel, Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus arrived in America and set about creating an independent studio that would be able to compete with the majors… and no one could have anticipated just how close these two outsiders would get in nearly taking over both Hollywood and the UK film industry. From 1979 to 1989 Golan and Globus produced more than 120 films through their American based production entity, CANNON FILMS. They ruthlessly and enthusiastically pursued their American Dream of turning a renegade independent outfit into the seventh Hollywood major with an aggressive pre-sales policy and an insanely prolific schedule for cheap mass production, centering on genre fare. Thanks to a revolutionary financing plan Cannon found itself in the position of having to keep making films to keep their ever expanding company alive - always hoping the next production would be that elusive $100 million blockbuster. Their filmography literally explodes with high-concept titles such as: Breakin' 1 & 2 , The Delta Force, Invasion U.S.A., Missing In Action, American Ninja, Deathwish 2,3,4 & 5, Cobra, Over The Top, Bloodsport and Masters of the Universe. The successful partnership championed macho action movie stars such as Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Charles Bronson, Michael Dudikoff, Sho Kosugi and even Sylvester Stallone.Featuring illuminating interviews and electrifying movie excerpts, ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: THE WILD, UNTOLD STORY OF CANNON FILMS is not just a story about a unique filmmaking legacy, but of two cousins whose passion for cinema changed the way movies were made and marketed, and how ultimately this passion would come between them and the company they built together. This is a one-of-a-kind story about two-of-a-kind men who changed film forever.

Spiritual Voices. From the Diaries of War / Dukhovnye golosa. Iz dnevnikov voyny / Духовные голоса. Из дневников войны (1995) 2 x DVD9

Spiritual Voices 1995
How do you wage war with an enemy who surrounds you at all times but remains forever out of sight? This was the question raised by filmmaker Alexander Sokurov as he journeyed to the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border to interview the Russian soldiers trapped in a perpetual state of danger and desolation. As the weary soldiers await the arrival of an enemy who may never materialize, Sokurov embeds himself with them to offer one of the most unique and involved portrayals of military quandary ever committed to celluloid.

"...We began to make our film in summer, then came again in winter. We worked in the places, where war is daily routine, where the state of war is not a sudden attack, but the normal life itself. Namely — fighting operations on the border between Tadjikistan and Afghanistan. Sometimes it were many days of troubled waiting. Sometimes battle: assault or repulse of it. But always there were victims, and always there was parting from the relatives and friends. And always anguish and abandonment. Proceeding from the idea of my home country, which I have formed, Russia is a land permanently waging war, and people here are formed always ready to go to war. Our national heroes are peoples who took part in war — not those who created something unusual, sitting and working peacefully. Russia is hardly imaginable for me without those convulsions of war, without this military trembling" - Alexander Sokurov (from the TV interview before the demonstration of the film).

AK 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa (1943-1993) 25 x DVD Criterion Collection

AK 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa (1943-1993) 25 x DVD Criterion Collection
The legendary director, who created such classics as Seven Samurai, Yojimbo and Rashomon, was born in 1910, and this collection was released in 2009 in anticipation of his 100th anniversary. While Kurosawa didn't live to see it (he died in 1998), collectors will be absolutely thrilled by the quality of this Criterion Collection product. Twenty-five discs capture the Japanese director at his finest, and four of the films have never before been released on DVD. This is the most complete set of Akira Kurosawa films ever made available to the public, and devoted fans will get over 3,072 minutes of widescreen viewing pleasure. From postwar noir to samurai epics (Toshiro Mifune is the man!), he was truly a director without equal.

Since he directed exactly 30 films during his 57 year career, that means this Akira Kurosawa collection is missing only five titles. Below's a complete list of the films included in AK 100: 25 Films of Akira Kurosawa, along with a description of each.
