"The Rack" focuses on the return of Capt. Edward Hall Jr., a Korean war vet touted as a hero, the son of a distinguished colonel. However, in classic Serling fashion, commenting on the issues of both humanity and current events, Hall is branded by a traitor, once by a fellow comrade (Lee Marvin in a very low-key, brief but intense performance) and once, officially by a military tribunal. Faced with defending his honor and actions, Hall becomes the victim of a passive aggressive witch-hunt: fellow soldiers look on him with scorn or confusion, the tribunal responsible for determining his guilt or innocence remains stoic and clinical, and his own family is intensely split down the middle. His only allies are his defense attorney (Edmond O'Brien) and widowed sister-in-law, Aggie (Anne Francis), while his biggest foe is his distant, patriotic father (Walter Pidgeon in an understat ed, almost equally complex role) who coldly asks, "why couldn't you have died nobly like your brother?"

He wanted to stay honest once he left jail, but it's tough in the Alexanderplatz section of Berlin. The post-war society is crumbling, and it appears that nothing will bring it back. Biberkopf and everyone around him are doomed.

Heimat 2: Chronicle Of A Generation covers the years 1960 to 1970, and follows one of the younger generation, Hermann (Henry Arnold), who travels to Munich to study music and composition at the Conservatory. At 16, he swore never to love again after his affair with a woman 12 years his senior was discovered. But in Munich he becomes smitten with Clarissa Lichtblau (Salome Kammer), a cellist. On his first day at the Conservatory, Hermann meets many of the characters that will make up the main cast of this complicated series. Some are fellow musicians or composers, but there are also filmmakers, and later, writers and actors.
Nazism, war, and the Holocaust are things from which this younger generation of Germans cannot escape. Initially they seem disgusted or disinterested in the Nazis, but history, particularly on the personal level, catches up with them.
Each of the 13 episodes focuses on a different character in the group, while the story of Hermann and the others continues to thread through. The series is a complicated tapestry of personal stories, expertly woven together.
