Bill Douglas was a Scottish filmmaker of high regard and low output; his brief career produced a trilogy of short films and one feature release. Facets' The Bill Douglas Trilogy contains his critically celebrated autobiographical films My Childhood, My Ain Folk and My Way Home.

The narrative is largely autobiographical, following Jamie (played with heart-breaking conviction by Stephen Archibald) as he grows up in a poverty-stricken mining village in post-war Scotland. In these brutal surroundings, and subject to hardship and rejection, Jamie learns to fend for himself. We see him grow from child to adolescent - angry and bewildered, but playful, creative and affectionate.

Sawdust and Tinsel presents the story of tormented relationships against the garish background of a low-budget traveling circus. Albert is tired of the circus, and of his mistress, and goes to visit his wife anyway. The mistress reacts by paying a visit to Frans (Hasse Eckman), a lustful actor from the local theatre troupe. As the film progresses, Albert and Anna throw themselves into games of power, psychosexual manipulation, and jealousy—all culminating in a violent and bitter climax in the center of the circus ring.

She eventually becomes pregnant, and the officer dies - leaving her in difficult straits indeed. Years later, Sasha accidentally runs into Lyuba on the streets of Odessa, she is a lowly vendor of piroshki (pastry turnovers), and is obviously very poor. Sasha himself is married but that does not stop his old feelings from returning in full force even though Lyuba seems as neutral as ever. This film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Picture in 1984, and had an attendance of 14,000,000 when it was released in the USSR.

A sublime, exceptionally well acted film about a single working class mother and her teenage son. She finds a man and marries him, her son is jealous and full of hot air at first but comes to understand her in the end. That's all. The simplicity of the story notwithstanding, this is one of the most sincere and lyrical films to have been produced in the 1960s-1970s Soviet Union. Very realistic, too, showing the life as it was then. Lyusyena Ovchinnikova is superb, it is this film that makes one realize what a wonderful and under-appreciated actress she was. Nikolay Burlyayev is very good as a lanky teenager, the final scene with him carrying a glass of carbonated water for his mother is stunning. Oleg Efremov is very convincing as a working class man who found his happiness at last.

The story takes place in an dilapidated, industrial North Carolina town where whites and African-Americans live together in poverty. However, this film is not a depressing exploration into the failed American dream or the problems of surviving on little money. Green optimistically focuses his attention on the lives of five young people who each possess their own goals and thoughts about the world. They easily interact with the adults of the community and discuss the dreadful ghosts of both the past and the present. Still, the exuberance of youth pervades the tale even when tragedy strikes a central character. Everything may not work out perfectly, but hope still exists within the minds of the town's residents.
Although the narrator is a girl, the film ends up focusing mostly on the boys. Nasia, her older sister, and her other friends, share humorous talk about boys, and a sense of togetherness. But the boys talk and act in ways that betray disconnection and emptiness. The first part of the film moves in the same wandering, seemingly aimless way as the characters. Then a sudden tragedy confronts the kids with a reality that they have trouble knowing how to deal with.

It's an uphill battle, and everyone has something to hide. It's a "trust no one situation" as Claire and Grimes get to the bottom of the case.

Copen extends a friendly hand to Decker, with no strings attached. Decker is scared of Copen, but he's more afraid of the various deviants and hardcore criminals trying to victimize him. Eventually, their relationship deepens into an honest friendship with both of them trying to figure out how to get out of prison the honest way, by manipulating the law. When events in the prison damage both their reputations, though, the legal means no longer work so they beg! in entertaining the notion of escape.
