Three Sisters (1970) DVD9 and Blu-Ray Kino Lorber

Three Sisters 1970
Put celebrated actor Laurence Olivier in charge of directing an adaptation of Anton Chekhov's "Three Sisters", and there's a guarantee of quality seldom seen in the stage-to-screen tradition. Preserving his work on the material for the Royal National Theater, Olivier shows immense respect for Chekhov's writing and the needs of cinema with this endeavor, part of the American Film Theater's efforts during the 1970s to bring theater to the masses.

Nearly a thousand miles away from their beloved Moscow, Chekhov's Three Sisters live in virtual exile. Olga, a schoolmistress, attempts to support her siblings and the home that is the sole legacy of their late army officer father. Masha finds relief from her empty marriage in an affair with a passionate young colonel. Irina, the youngest, wills herself to return the affections of an ardent suitor in the hopes that he will whisk her off to the city before it is too late. Intoxicated by yesterday's triumphs and heedless of tomorrow's disasters, the Three Sisters are left to sift through the debris of their shattered dreams on the eve of the social and political upheaval that will transform Russia forever.

Olivier delivers a lengthy but alert interpretation of "Three Sisters" that benefits tremendously from a game cast, which includes Joan Plowright, Alan Bates, and Derek Jacobi. The ensemble is committed to the powerful emotionality of the play, but they join Olivier's interest in screen construction, mindful of the bigness of the frame and the power of the close-up, adjusting performances to preserves intimacies otherwise impossible to achieve in a theatrical setting.

Ladies: Return to Savage Beach (1998) 12 x DVD9

Bullets, Bombs and Babes The Andy Sidaris Collection
Long before Marvel had their "cinematic universe", Andy Sidaris created his own "L.E.T.H.A.L. Ladies Cinematic Universe". From 1985 to 1998, through the course of a dozen films, writer/director Andy Sidaris showed us how the agents of L.E.T.H.A.L. (Legion to Ensure Total Harmony And Law) worked and played. The films weren't trying to be Oscar-winners, and they usually followed the same formula, but they did the trick for the VHS generation. These films were popular mainstays on cable and premium channels, such as Cinemax and USA. The history of the Malibu Bay Films empire that Andy built was chronicled in the 2003 book "Bullets, Bombs and Babes: The Films of Andy Sidaris".

The unmistakable formula of director Andy Sidaris: beautiful people filmed in exotic locations with an unapologetic amount of explosions, gunplay, and Playboy Playmates & Penthouse Pets, all with big-budget production values on a low budget.... and did I mention women in and out of sexy outfits? Enjoy the entire collection fully loaded with bonus features including commentary, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and new trailers. All of the movies are rated R, contain nudity and sexual situations.

Starring Playboy Playmates & Penthouse Pets:
Dona Speir, Julie K. Smith, Hope Marie Carlton, Sybil Danning, Roberta Vasquez, Julie Strain and many more!

Jeune & Jolie / Young and Beautiful (2013) DVD5, DVD9, Blu-Ray

Young and Beautiful 2013
Following the well-received In The House, Francois Ozon returns with yet another voyeuristic character study with Jeune & Jolie (Young and Beautiful). Over the course of four weather seasons, the film follows a sexually driven adolescent striving to discover herself while pushing boundaries that society sets in front of her.

One summer, Isabelle, 16, is on holiday with her family on the French Riviera. Encouraged by her hedonistic parents, she allows an attractive young man to rob her of her virginity, but she takes no pleasure in the experience and sees no real significance in it. The following autumn, Isabelle, now 17, is a fully fledged Parisian prostitute, although naturally she keeps this fact from her parents. Between leaving school and returning to her comfortable middleclass home, she arranges to meet up with her clients at various hotels, clients she has no difficulty attracting over the internet.

Throughout, she remains curiously aloof, showing little interest in the encounters themselves or the money she makes, while Ozon slyly refrains from offering easy answers. As the enigmatic Isabelle, Marine Vacth is magnetic, delivering a star-making breakout performance in this sleek and sexy coming-of-age drama.

The Stunt Man (1980) 2xDVD9 and Blu-Ray Severin Films

The Stunt Man 1980
This brilliant and provocative film has the dubious distinction of sitting on the shelf with the label "commercially unviable." Lawrence B. Marcus's screenplay is based on Paul Brodeur's 1970 novel of the same title. The movie presents a fast-paced, revealing, and thoroughly engaging look at the movie business. Propelled by the excellent music of Dominic Frontiere and the expert cinematography of Mario Tosi, The Stunt Man is a beguiling work of art which lingers in the mind long after its closing credits.

Cameron (Steve Railsback) is a Vietnam veteran who is being pursued by the police and the FBI. During his flights from the law, he is involved in a strange episode where he apparently causes the death of another man. Eli Cross (Peter O'Toole), a charismatic and authoritarian film director who is making a movie about World War I, offers him work as a stunt man. Cameron soon discovers that the dead man was his predecessor in the job. For a while, the young fugitive is safe from discovery by the police; instead he is at the mercy of the director — an obsessed genius who senses that Cameron possesses the feral drive and madness to make his film something extraordinary.

Director Richard Rush thrusts us into the mad mad world of moviemaking. We see the hectic last three days of production from Cameron's point of view. In several daring stunt scenes, Cameron proves his pluck and death-defying courage. Each of the film's stunts is more dangerous than the one preceding it, and Eli Cross seems hellbent on capturing Cameron's death on film. Cameron is driven the point of total paranoia, unsure if he can trust anyone around him or even if he can rely on his own perceptions.

Dopo mezzanotte / After Midnight (2004) DVD5

Dopo mezzanotte 2004
Almost any film would automatically be worth watching if it were set in the amazingly gorgeous Mole Antonelliana the Museum of Cinema in Turin, Italy — but After Midnight surpasses all expectations.

Giorgio Pasotti plays Martino, the sad-eyed museum worker who venerates Keaton and who has tried as best he can to approximate Keaton's world, from the witty gadgets that populated his movie sets (a record player that turns into a bar) to the actor's signature pratfalls, tics and subtle physical gags. But Martino's tightly controlled universe is shattered with the arrival of Amanda (Francesca Inaudi), a fast-food clerk who crashes into his life after dousing her boss with a vat of french fry oil. The two embark on an unlikely romance, made problematic by Amanda's volatile boyfriend, Angel (Fabio Troiano).

The film utilizes the magic of cinema to communicate emotions between the characters in an enchanting way.

A Night at the Opera (1935) Blu-Ray Warner

A Night at the Opera 1935
The first movie the Marx Brothers did for MGM under the watchful eye of Irving Thalberg, A Night at the Opera is a comedic tour de force that was not only one of the Brother's funniest films, but also one of the most successful. In 1993, the movie was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry.

The plot to this movie, like all of the Marx brothers' best films, is really only there as a backdrop, a reason for all the zaniness to take place.

Groucho plays Otis B. Driftwood, a con man working the Opera scene in Italy. He is hired by the clueless widow, Mrs. Claypool (Margaret Dumont), to help her break into proper society. Meanwhile the egomaniacal star of the opera, Lassparri (Walter Woolf King), abuses his dresser (Harpo) and sexually harasses the company's young ingenue, Rosa (Kitty Carlisle), who is in love with the less successful, but equally talented tenor, Riccardo (Allan Jones). Riccardo is managed by Fiorello (Chico) who hustles Otis into signing him to a contract.
As the opera company sets sail to New York the three Marx Brothers follow it in order to help the young lovers reunite, make some cash, and bring down the arrogant Lassparri.

Blind Spot 1981
The young historian Elisabeth abruptly leaves her partner and young daughter in Germany to travel by train to the French city of Lyon. In the summer heat, she wanders near-empty streets in pursuit of Flora Tristan, the socialist feminist activist and writer who spent time in Lyon in 1844, just months before her death at age 41. Tristan roamed the country with the aim of organizing workers, calling on them to form a single trade union, while also campaigning for recognition of the fact that "woman is the proletariat of the proletariat." Carrying with her a tape recorder, a notebook, and Tristan's posthumously published diary, Le Tour de France, Elisabethdrifts across the cobblestones, unfettered by the demands of family life, subject to no will but her own. She runs into dead ends, kisses a stranger, sleeps in the daytime. Elisabeth tries to put together the clues she can find in Lyon wanting to reconstruct Tristan's life in the most sensual way.

Thieves Like Us (1974) DVD9, Blu-Ray

Thieves Like Us 1974
Director Robert Altman has directed a remake of Nicholas Ray's thriller In the Shadow of the Night, based on the 1949 novel by Raymond Chandler. "Thieves like us" is an authentic drama, gangster film and love story at the same time - a sincere story of actually quite ordinary people who cannot free themselves from the crime trap because crime is the only thing they can control. Into this crook plot, Altman incorporated a "Romeo & Juliet" radio show as an ironic and humorous contrast to what was happening on screen.

Thieves Like Us opens with T-Dub, Chicamaw and Bowie, meeting up on a rural Mississippi backroad after breaking out of jail. Faced with no employment options under the circumstances, the trio take up bank robbing again and stay on the move constantly. While the threesome are not particularly skillful in their robberies and often wound or kill people in their raids (most of which occur off-screen), they seem to enjoy reading about their own exploits in the newspapers as much as they enjoy the freedom of their routine. When Bowie is seriously wounded in a car accident and forced to recuperate while his partners fend for themselves, he falls in love with Keechie, the niece of Chicamaw, who nurses him back to health. Their romance is short-lived, however, once Bowie teams up with his former partners for one last bank job...

Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema V: Because of You (1952), Outside the Law (1956), The Midnight Story (1957) 3 x Blu-Ray Kino Lorber

Film Noir The Dark Side of Cinema V
Kino Lorber dives back into the Universal vaults for three more noirs making their Blu-ray debut in Volume V of their Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema series. This set has three stories of people hiding their true identities: one to get away from her past life with her gangster ex-fiancee (Because of You), one to break up an international counterfeiting ring (Outside the Law) and one to learn the truth behind a beloved priest's murder (The Midnight Story).

Though the labeling of some of these titles "noir" is highly debatable, and the majority of films in this series are mostly just average, it's still enormous fun to catch up with these largely forgotten, generally lesser films.

Luchino Visconti’s The Damned / La caduta degli dei (Gotterdammerung) (1969) Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

The Damned 1969
Sex and swastikas! — that combo shows up in both trash cinema and high art. Luchino Visconti's searing look at Nazi corruption sees an industrialist family torn apart by murderous greed and ambition worthy of the Borgias. The fiendish Countess Ingrid Thulin has raised a twisted son (Helmut Berger) to serve her deadly schemes; her path to power involves framing one heir for a killing while another rival is sacrificed in an SS massacre for the good of the Reich. The chilling treachery plays out at family dinner tables, in the offices of a steel mill, and in various bedrooms; Nazi fervor is equated with sex perversion.

The heightened performances and Visconti's luridly expressionistic use of Technicolor conjure a garish world of decaying opulence in which one family's downfall comes to stand for the moral rot of a nation.

Decadence and depravity abound in Luchino Visconti's scathing The Damned, the first in the filmmaker's so-called German Trilogy, followed by Death in Venice and Ludwig, each of which delineates a different era and style of German psychopathology.

Out of the Blue (1980) 2 x Blu-Ray BFI

Out of the Blue 1980
Like James Dean, Linda Manz appeared in many television shows before starring in three movies by famous directors. The actress was Generation X's Dean, and Dennis Hopper's Out of the Blue was her Rebel Without a Cause. Both embodied the spirit of cinematic youth rebellion wrapped in black leather. The 1980 drama started out as a weepy made-for-TV, got hi-jacked by an infamous dope fiend, and became a feral punk masterpiece.

Cebe (Linda Manz) is a teenage rebel obsessed with Elvis and the Sex Pistols. Her trucker father, Don (Dennis Hopper) is in prison after drunkenly smashing his rig into a school bus, and her mother, Kathy (Sharon Farrell) is a junkie waitress who takes refuge in the arms of other men, including Don's best friend, Charlie (Don Gordon). With Don's release, the family struggles to reconnect and the trauma of the past looms large as dark secrets slowly begin to emerge.

Initially only hired as an actor in the family-friendly drama 'Cebe', Hopper took over directing duties a week into production, rewriting the script and starting principal photography from scratch. The bleak punk epic that resulted - Out of the Blue - arguably represents Hopper's strongest outing as a filmmaker and features an astonishing performance by Manz.

The Long Goodbye (1973) Blu-Ray Kino Lorber

The Long Goodbye 1973
Elliott Gould gives one of his best performances as a quirky, mischievous Philip Marlowe in Robert Altman's fascinating and original send-up of Raymond Chandler's classic detective story. Co-starring Nina Van Pallandt, Sterling Hayden, Mark Rydell and Henry Gibson with a screenplay Leigh Brackett, The Long Goodbye is a gloriously inspired tribute to Hollywood with an ending that's as controversial as is it provocative. Private eye Philip Marlowe (Gould) faces the most bizarre case of his life, when a friend's apparent suicide turns into a double murder involving a sexy blonde, a disturbed gangster and a suitcase of drug money. But as Marlowe stumbles toward the truth, he soon finds himself lost in a maze of sex and deceit - only to discover that in L.A., if love is dangerous... friendship is murder.

Despite cries of outrage from hard-line Chandler purists, this is, along with Hawks' The Big Sleep, easily the most intelligent of all screen adaptations of the writer's work.

Director: Robert Altman
Cast: Elliott Gould, Nina Van Pallandt, Sterling Hayden, Marty Augustine, Henry Gibson, David Arkin, Jim Bouton, Warren Berlinger, Jo Ann Brody, Stephen Coit, Jack Knight

Early Universal Vol.1: Skinner’s Dress Suit (1926), The Shield of Honor (1927), The Shakedown (1929) 2 x Blu-Ray Eureka – Masters of Cinema

Early Universal Vol.1
It's a depressing fact that a great many of the films produced during the silent era have been lost. Not only have masters and prints been destroyed, gone missing or disintegrated over time, but critics and distributors tend to keep most of their focus on big-name directors and stars from the era, such as Lang, Murnau, Chaplin and Keaton. As such, there's a huge chunk of cinematic history that is either gone forever or is at least hard to come by for anyone without access to studio vaults or historical archives.

Eureka Video and Universal Pictures attempt to redress the balance somewhat with this handsome package of three obscure but worthy silent movies.

None of these films offer anything that will rocket them to the status of 'lost gem' but as curios from a long distant time and as examples of early innovation they have a lot to offer.

Complemented by excellent new original scores and commentaries, this box-set provides a compelling taste of an era when Hollywood was finally producing fully-fledged movie-making in the modern sense, hardly held back by the lack of sound.

Big Screen British Comedy: Dad’s Army (1971), Steptoe & Son (1972), Steptoe and Son Ride Again (1973), Are You Being Served? (1977) 3 x Blu-Ray

Big Screen British Comedy
The first radio comedies were adapted into big screen hits as early as the 1940s, but the 70s saw the golden age of the phenomenon, with successful TV series ranging from Till Death Us Do Part to Dad's Army and Man About The House to Father Dear Father all crossing to the silver screen. A brand new box set collects together four of the most famous - three in high definition for the very first time anywhere.

Covering three brilliant sitcom smash hits, the films are: Dad's Army (1971); Steptoe & Son (1972); Steptoe And Son Ride Again (1973); and Are You Being Served? (1977).

Alongside the four restored films is an eye-watering surfeit of extra features: archive interviews, new commentaries, reproductions of original publicity materials, image galleries, isolated soundtracks, archive TV segments, and much more - making this a box set that any classic comedy fan has to own.

Cold War Creatures: Four Films from Sam Katzman: Creature with the Atom Brain (1955), The Werewolf (1956), Zombies of Mora Tau (1957), The Giant Claw (1957) 4 x Blu-Ray Arrow Films Limited Edition

Cold War Creatures Four Films from Sam Katzman
Sam Katzman's name may frankly not be held in the same general esteem as some other famous Golden Era producers like David O. Selznick or Adolph Zukor, but for sheer number of films produced and perhaps especially in cost to profit ratio, Katzman might eclipse more ostensible luminaries than you might expect. While Zukor, as the head of Paramount Pictures, got literally hundreds of "presents" credits, his actual producing credits (according to the IMDb) number fewer than a hundred, and Selznick logs in with even fewer than that. Of course both Selznick and Zukor tended to enjoy much more fulsome budgets and more glittering marquee stars than Katzman, a hardscrabble guy who started working in the film industry when he was barely a teenager, and who then climbed the ranks to work at a number of studios, including "poverty row" centers like Monogram, but also 20th Century Fox, Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Columbia, ending up with (again according to the IMDb) 239 credits as producer. The four Katzman produced efforts Arrow Video has aggregated in this appealing collection may arguably not be from Hollywood's "real" Golden Era, with, as the title of the collection may hint at, these films all emanating a mid- fifties ambience that sought to attract younger viewers in particular away from the hypnotizing influence of that confounded television invention, often courtesy of plots that included science fiction and/or horror.

Once Upon a Time in China: The Complete Films: Wong Fei Hung / Once Upon a Time (1991), Wong Fei Hung II: Nam yee tung chi keung / Once Upon a Time in China II (1992), Wong Fei Hung III: Si wong jaang ba / Once Upon a Time in China III (1993), Wong Fei Hung IV: Wong je ji fung / Once Upon a Time in China IV (1993), Wong Fei Hung chi neung: Lung shing chim pa / Once Upon a Time in China V (1994), Wong fei hung VI: Sai wik hung see / Once Upon a Time in China and America (1997) 6 x Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

Once Upon a Time in China
The Once Upon a Time in China franchise is regularly cited as having kickstarted the weirdly dormant martial arts film genre in the Asian market, but it's also arguable that the series helped to foster another element of "eastern" cinema that is not necessarily relegated only to China (Korean films also come to mind in this regard): a kind of "rah rah" jingoism that seeks to exploit national identity while also perhaps hinting, none too subliminally at times, that the "natives" (Chinese or otherwise) may be just a bit smarter than some of the interlopers.

Tsui Hark's fingerprints are all over the five entries in the Once Upon a Time in China series. Tsui produced and co-wrote all the films in the series, and directed four of them. Though each can be enjoyed according to its own merits, taken together the series traces out a very specific arc both in terms of historical era and character development. Turn-of-20th-century period pieces, replete with absurdly over-the-top kung fu (not to mention wire fu) set pieces, and characterized by a broad streak of antic comedy, these films are both crowd-pleasers and sly reinterpretations of episodes in Chinese history.

The films, which were released between 1991 and 1994, focus on martial arts master and traditional Chinese medicine practitioner Wong Fei-hung, played by Jet Li in the first three installments and Vincent Zhao in the last two. Wong is a figure drawn from real life, who had been depicted previously in dozens of films and television programs as a venerable old man, so Li's younger, more dynamic portrayal is part and parcel of Tsui's tendency toward unconventional recontextualizations. The series's frequent inclusion of historical figures does double duty as both a comment on a particular moment in Chinese history as well as sociopolitical aspects of contemporary Hong Kong in the leadup to its 1997 handover to China.

The series plays out the often contentious, tendentious relationship between China and the West. On one level, this is embodied at the interpersonal level through the burgeoning romance between Wong and his so-called 13th Aunt (Rosamund Kwan), who returns to town dressed in Victorian garb, fluent in English, and with a newfangled box camera in tow. In the third film, she receives an early movie camera and, in a nifty bit of self-reflexivity, some footage that she shoots is integral to exposing a murderous conspiracy. In this formulation, Wong represents a dogged traditionalism, while 13th Aunt stands for measured assimilation.

This Sporting Life (1963) 2 x DVD9 Criterion Collection, Blu-Ray Network

This Sporting Life 1963
Often regarded as the capstone of the British New Wave of the late 1950s and early '60s, Lindsay Anderson's This Sporting Life (1963) is a stark depiction of life in an industrial town, focusing on the personal and professional struggles of a brutish rugby player.

The film, adapted from the novel by David Storey, tells the tale of Frank Machin, a miner in Yorkshire whose talent for sport sees him give up the day job and become a local hero at the rugby league club. His new-found fame and wealth (it's all relative – he signs for the club for a thousand pounds) doesn't make him happy because of the dark, damaging relationship he embarks upon with his austere landlady Margaret Hammond (Rachel Roberts). The vulnerable widow is cold and cruel to Machin; describing him as "a great ape on a football field", but he lacks the education and finesse to express his love for her in ways that don't involve buying elaborate gifts that make her uncomfortable. The story revolves around their stifling and often tumultuous relationship.

Slacker (1990), It’s Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books (1988) 2 x DVD9 and Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

Slacker 1990
In 1991, a young filmmaker named Richard Linklater took his low-budget feature film "Slacker" to the Sundance Film Festival. It wasn't technically his first film (that distinction belongs to 1988's "It's Impossible to Learn to Plow By Reading Books"), but it was the first of his films that anybody had seen, and it became a sleeper hit at the festival. As more and more people saw the film, it began to gather a cult following, due to its unorthodox structure and cast of bizarre, yet somehow relatable, characters. Over the next two decades, "Slacker" would influence countless independent filmmakers (most notably Kevin Smith, who has credited the film as a direct inspiration for 1994's "Clerks"), help define a generation that was in need of a voice, and launch the career of one of the most unique and innovative auteurs in modern American cinema.

Depicting an ordinary day in the life of several seemingly random citizens of Austin, Texas, "Slacker" lacks any sort of coherent plot or narrative structure. Instead, the film takes a "fly on the wall" approach: Linklater pulls away from people in the middle of one conversation and drops in on people in the middle of another. Nobody really seems to be doing much of anything, or at least not anything productive; two crimes are committed, guys are working on their cars, a girl is looking through the volumes in a used book shop, a woman tries to sell a Madonna pap smear. But mostly people are just talking: about politics, personal growth, menstrual cycles, art. Linklater himself offers an intriguing monologue on the nature of dreams, and the mind-boggling possibilities of alternate realities. A JFK assassination enthusiast and UFO conspiracy theorist wax poetic on their chosen obsessions. An anarchist bemoans the fact that he never blew up the Texas State Capitol building. Themes of oppression and restlessness dominate their otherwise unrelated conversations, and yet none of the varied cast of characters seems interested in actually taking action to accomplish anything, thus giving "Slacker" its appropriate title.

The Paramount Comedy Shorts 1928-1942: Cavalcade of Comedy DVD9

The Paramount Comedy Shorts 1928-1942 Cavalcade of Comedy
Hollywood Boulevard intersects Broadway in this lively collection of classic shorts from the Paramount Studios. In the late 1920s and early '30s - when the movie industry was just learning to talk - Paramount wisely turned to the New York stage for a new crop of entertainers who had already mastered the nuances of verbal comedy. This anthology serves as a laugh-filled time capsule of the brightest lights of vaudeville, showcasing the early works of such American legends as Jack Benny, Bing Crosby, Burns & Allen, Eddie Cantor, and George Jessel (who originated the lead role of The Jazz Singer on stage). It also provides a fascinating historical record of some of the stage legends who have begun to fade from memory, including Lulu McConnell, Tom Howard and Smith and Dale (the inspiration for Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys). Also included are Lighthouse Love and Cleaning Up, a pair of Mack Sennett comedies that disprove the myth that sound technology destroyed the slapstick tradition. This DVD reveals three incarnations of a popular subgenre of slapstick, the home-builder's nightmare: The Plasterers, Plastered and A Put Up Job. Watching the three films together (made in 1929, 1930 and 1931), one can follow the evolution of vaudeville slapstick to its own truly cinematic form.

Les visiteurs du soir / The Devil’s Envoys (1942) DVD9 and Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

Les visiteurs du soir 1942
In the year 1485, the Devil sends two of his envoys to drive people to despair. Disguised as minstrels, they enter the castle of Baron Hughes (Fernand Ledoux), who is getting ready to marry his beautiful daughter Anne (Marie Dea).

Du skal aere din hustru / Master of the House (1925) DVD9 and Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

Master of the House 1925
The plot follows the Frandsen family, mostly centered around the selfish, ruthless, disagreeable father, Viktor (Johannes Meyer). He is never satisfied with the way his house is run and the way his children behave. His hard-working wife, Ida (Astrid Holm), does everything she can (and in some cases more than she should) to try to keep Viktor happy… to no avail. He berates and chastises her at every turn, and he treats his three children as if they are more like servants then members of his family. Everyone tip-toes around him, except of course, for his childhood nursemaid, Nana (Mathilde Nielsen). She is disappointed with the way he has turned out and isn't afraid to put him in his place.

After a confrontation between Viktor and Ida, Nana suggests to Ida that she go stay with her mother and seek some medical attention for her deteriorated condition. Nana stays and begins running the household, but not in the way Ida had, and certainly not in the way Viktor would prefer. What is at first a shock to Viktor, quickly becomes a life-lesson that he is not soon to forget.

The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982) DVD9 and Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez 1982
"The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez" takes its title from the folk song that sprang up in the wake of the real-life eponymous character, a Mexican-American farmer who evaded a massive manhunt in turn of the century Texas after he was accused of killing a local lawman.

Cortez's unhappy tale is thanks to the shortcomings of a translator who didn't understand the distinction in Spanish between "horse" (caballo) and "mare" (yegua). The sheriff, investigating accusations of horse theft, is instantly convinced of Cortez's guilt and comes after him with a gun, shooting Cortez's brother in the process. Cortez shoots and kills the sheriff and the hunt begins.

Shifting its perspective between the pursuers and the pursued, The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez is a thrilling chase film and a nuanced procedural that peels away the layers of prejudice and myth surrounding Cortez, uncovering the true story of an ordinary man persecuted by the law and transfigured by legend.

Director: Robert M. Young
Cast: Edward James Olmos, James Gammon, Tom Bower

They Came to a City (1944) Blu-Ray BFI

They Came to a City 1944
In 1943 J. B. Priestley wrote "They Came to a City" as a means of scrutinizing attitudes to the post war world. He believed that new better ways of living could come out of the War, that the mistakes made after the First World War did not have to be repeated.

Nine characters, all from different social backgrounds are taken out of their lives and placed outside the walls of a strange city. They have no idea how they got here, whether they're dreaming or simply dead. Soon the great doors open and they are let loose in a city free from disparity and social injustice. For some, it's a utopia; for others, a nightmare. And each must make the decision whether to stay or go.

For a film released towards the end of World War II, this is a surprisingly dour and dark work, with touches of humour and a sense of reality that may not have fit easily with an audience seeking escapism. It certainly wasn't the normal product of Ealing Studios, but it's still a fine example of the post-World War II British film, restored to its former glory by the BFI from the original 35mm negatives.

Director: Basil Dearden
Cast: John Clements, Googie Withers, Raymond Huntley

The Faithful Heart (1932) DVD5

The Faithful Heart 1932
The sailor's "girl in every port" is given a twist in this melodrama based on Monckton Hoffe's play of the same name. After saying goodbye to a brief fling with a young waitress 20 years earlier, Waverley runs into Blackie who claims to be his daughter. Now a Colonel, he must choose between the consequences of his past actions and a status-building marriage to a wealthy socialite.

The decision to cast the same actress as the mother and the daughter seems very unlikely today – particularly when the actors playing father and daughter (Herbert Marshall and Edna Best) were married in real life.

In the Heat of the Night (1967) DVD9 and Blu-Ray Criterion Collection

In the Heat of the Night 1967
In the small, sleepy town of Sparta, Mississippi, where they roll up the sidewalks at night, a police officer on a routine, boring nighttime patrol through the downtown stumbles across a dead body, a murdered man. The victim is a rich, white Chicago industrialist who was building a controversial factory in the town. The primary suspect, at least to this cop's black-and-white eye, is a lone black man, well dressed and carrying a wad of cash, whom the cop discovers waiting at the deserted train station.

The "suspect" out to be Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), a Philadelphia cop who just happens to be an expert on homicide. Police Chief Gillespie (Rod Steiger), at the urging of the victim's widow, grudgingly asks for Tibbs's help in solving the crime. Poitier's performance in In the Heat of the Night is brilliant as his calm, competent Tibbs gets to work, dazzling his new colleagues with his ingeniousness and simultaneously enraging them with his "uppityness" — Tibbs always retains his dignity even as his rage and impotence in dealing with these racist yahoos bubbles just below the surface. Likewise, Steiger is fabulous as a man gradually overcoming his prejudices in spite of himself.

The Prisoner (1955) Blu-Ray Arrow Academy

The Prisoner 1955
Jack Hawkins and Alec Guinness are the dynamite duo driving this intellectually daring and morally complex thriller forward.

The story takes place in some unnamed country in Eastern Europe, with characters likewise unidentified in the credits (though some are named in the film). As the story opens, The Cardinal (Alec Guinness) is arrested for "treason against the state." Aware of his influence as a popular religious leader and war hero, and fearing martyrdom, government leaders decide instead to discredit him. They assign The Interrogator (Jack Hawkins) to get him to crack, to confess to crimes he never committed, to wear him down psychologically to the point where he'd willingly appear before the public courts and destroy his own name. This begins a battle of wits between the two men.

The overall significance of Peter Glenville's The Prisoner, a two-hander interrogating the rights of religious freedom and political expression, falls squarely upon the perspective of the viewer. Upon its release in 1955, the film was banned in Italy for being anti-Catholic, and while it was rejected by the Venice Film Festival for being anti-communist, it was banned in Ireland for being pro-communist.
