For his 4th period video production final, Archie announces that he's going to kill himself on camera. His reasons for wanting to die are mundane: his parents don't pay attention to him – Mom (Nora Dunn) was a lawyer who resented being forced to give up her career when she got pregnant; Dad (Robert Kurcz) is wrapped up in the chicken-based fast-food franchise he owns – he's tragically still a virgin, everyone at school thinks he's weird for always having a camera in his hand, yada yada.

His own sense of justice having been violated by the court and social services, the hero decides to strike out on his own and reform the jailed teenager. His efforts to visit, bring books, arrange days off, file appeals, are finally successful in freeing his erstwhile attacker, but only at the expense of estranging him from his wife, his coach, his co-workers.

Club tout Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) has yet another plan to make himself rich, but this scheme requires him to cheat, deceive or swindle everyone he knows in the East End underworld, including his girlfriend Mary (Gene Tierney). Harry's backer is nightclub owner Phil Nosseross (Francis L. Sullivan). Harry deals straight with him, but he also makes a secret partner of Phil's ambitious wife Helen (Googie Withers), a move that Nosseross understandably mistakes for a romantic betrayal. But that's nothing compared to Harry's overall scam: he's angling to gain a foothold in the London wrestling racket controlled by the murderous gangster kingpin Kristo (Herbert Lom). Harry's ace in the hole is Gregorious the Great (Stanislaus Zbyszko), a legendary Greco-Roman wrestler that he befriends for the sole purpose of keeping Kristo at bay ... he's the gangster's father.

In this war drama, set towards the end of WW II, a Georgian farmer embarks upon a dangerous journey to find his son. His travails begin after he learns that his boy, a soldier recently wounded in battle, is recuperating in the hospital. The farmer sets off to see him. This man has an abiding love and respect for the beauty of the land. As he journeys he is appalled at the destruction that surrounds him. Once lush and beautiful, the bombed out land has become deeply scarred and barren. He arrives at the hospital to discover that his son has been sent back to his tank unit. The dogged farmer then sets off to find it. He soon finds himself in the midst of a battle. This leads him to join the Soviet army. He fights hard until his tank unit is assigned to attack German vineyards. The destruction of such fertile land appalls him and he stops them. When he finally does catch up with his son, the boy has again been shot and dies in his father's arms.
