37 Days (2014) DVD9

Covering the final weeks before the outbreak of war, 37 Days follows the rapidly changing crisis through the eyes of the principal players, during a hot summer, from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June 1914, to the declaration of war between Britain and Germany on 4 August. The drama serial will overturn orthodox assumptions about the war's inevitability. Such a disaster did not happen by chance, and nor was it a foregone conclusion. It took considerable effort and terrific ingenuity, as well as staggering bad luck, to destroy a system that had kept the general peace in Europe for the 99 years that followed the Battle of Waterloo and the fall of Napoleon.
The miniseries is a mixture of drama and documentary, its tone is somewhat aseptically dry in which many details are simplified, but it highlights some aspects in order to answer the question that the viewer makes constantly: how we go from peace to war in just over a month?

Anomalisa (2015) DVD9

Michael Stone is the author of a book on the skill of customer service, attending a conference in Cincinnati where many have come to hear him speak & learn from his genius. Ironically, Michael doesn't see those around his as the individuals he preaches about in his book, instead viewing every person as a collection of boring voices & faces. That is, until he meets Lisa. She's an anomaly in his cookie-cutter world, a voice that sings in his ears instead of droning on, a face that elicits excitement instead of dread. And so a very short hotel love affair ensues, one that banishes thoughts of his wife & son to the recesses of his mind, and allows him to believe that perhaps Lisa is special, perhaps he just hadn't found "the one" until now, and perhaps life doesn't have to be as meaningless as it has felt so far.

Over the course of four discs we follow the rise of Keaton's career when he took his first steps as a film actor - after having spent almost all of his youth on stage and in the world of Vaudeville – courtesy of his parents Myra and Joseph, two seasoned stage actors. In fact, father Joseph owned a traveling show together with Harry Houdini called 'The Mohawk Medicine Company'. And it was during his young years that little Joseph (performing with his parents as 'The Three Keatons') acquired the nickname 'Buster' due to his talent of falling and tumbling without getting bruised or seriously injured. It was a talent that would serve him well in years to come!

Buster Keaton - the little fellow with the porkpie hat and the frozen face - never knew any other purpose in life except to make audiences laugh. His film career began in 1917, when comedian Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle saw him on the vaudeville circuit and hired him. After making a series of Arbuckle shorts, including The Butcher Boy, Coney Island and The Cook, Keaton struck out on his own in 1919, when he acquired Charlie Chaplin's old studio and began producing his own independent comedies. Before turning to feature production in 1923, he created some of the finest short comic masterpieces of the silent era in nineteen two-reelers, the finest of which include The High Sign, One Week and Cops.

This is cinematic history and each of the short films in this collection is a miniature monument to an artform that was suddenly realising its cinematic potential.

Fitting for a movie about a woman who finds a new life through photography, Everlasting Moments features stunning images: A streetcar looming out of a wall of fog; the shadow of a zeppelin gliding across a courtyard; a family bouncing around a bedroom, all wearing Charlie Chaplin mustaches.

This rich, emotionally powerful film begins in 1907 in a Swedish port, where Maria Larsson (Maria Heiskanen) struggles to raise her four children with little help from her boozing, womanizing husband Sigfrid (Mikael Persbrandt). By accident, she rediscovers a camera that she'd won in a lottery; through its lens she reinvents her confined, unhappy world as a place of warmth, hope, and spiritual transcendence--and begins a furtive, yearning romance with an older photographer who gives her supplies from his studio.

Everlasting Moments covers decades of Maria's life, capturing not only her character but the character of the times in which she lived--an era of social unrest, world war, and personal upheaval. The war between England and France is raging over America and humble fur trapper Tom Dobb (Al Pacino) has no interest in becoming involved the fight. That is until Sgt. Maj. 24 years later, Revolution is back as Revolution: Revisited. Director Hudson and star Pacino have re-cut the movie, subtracting ten minutes of running time and adding a narration that works to clarify the film's storyline. In the interview featurette included with the discs, Hugh Hudson claims that his film was rushed to completion before it was ready, and that many of the changes in the new Revisited version should have been done in 1985.

Following her death, he is placed into an orphanage, but when he leaves, he ends up wandering the streets with the city's beggars.

Finding refuge at an old rubbish tip on the outskirts of the city, Toto's optimistic approach to life infects all those he encounters. Soon he and his fellow poor are creating their own mini-town, complete with street signs, main square and water fountains, and all is happy until Toto receives a magical dove that grants wishes. When the shantytown residents use the dove for materialistic purposes, two angels steal the dove back just when Toto needs it most – to stop the town from being razed to the ground by the new owners...

Fortunes of War (1987) 2 x DVD9

Based on Olivia Manning's six novels comprising The Balkan Trilogy and The Levant Trilogy, which Anthony Burgess once wrote was possibly "the finest record (of World War II) produced by a British writer", Fortunes of War tells the story of the war's effect on a small group of British citizens. At the centre of the tale is a newly married couple, Guy and Harriet Pringle, played by Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson, as they are caught in the terrifying aftermath of Hitler's advance across the eastern front. The story is almost biographical in its reflection of Manning's own true-life experiences as she accompanied her husband to Bucharest before the War and then fled the advancing Nazis to Greece, Egypt, and eventually Jerusalem.

As the tale opens, Guy and Harriet have arrived in Bucharest, having travelled there by the Orient Express, to stay in the Hotel Athenee Palace, where Guy's friends, all expatriates gather in the English bar. Guy has come here to take up a lecturers job and it soon becomes apparent that he is totally wrapped up in his work, to the detriment of his relationship with Harriet. He is also a liberal idealist who, although aware of Germany's invasion of Poland, believes the goodwill of the Russians will be enough to hold off the Nazis. However, as the conflict deepens and Romania turns fascist, the Pringles, and their group of friends, are forced to flee...

This drama was originally broadcast on the BBC as a television miniseries.

The partisan spying leads to the blowing up of the factory where the rocket is built. The second part of the spying mission calls for them to get a photo of the rocket for British intelligence. The efforts of the resistance enables, in 1943, the Brits to stage a raid at the site and transport a rocket back to England.

However, the donkey eats Massoud's father's lunch and is taken to a butcher. Abdullah and Massoud try to rescue Bim from the butcher, but robbers get there first and steal the donkey along with the butcher's goods. The robbers escape to the sea, and Abdullah and Massoud stage one last rescue attempt with all of their friends to try to save Bim.

The fact is, Yang's father had tried to warn the Emperor about a corrupt official in his government, and now that official wants to wipe out the man's family, which of course includes Yang. Shen Chai enters into a relationship with Yang, after which he is transformed into a different, much stronger person, one who isn't afraid to plot the deaths of others to protect the woman he loves.

Inspired by the aesthetics of Japanese samurai films, this poetic three-hour epic brought Chinese cinema to new technical and artistic heights, revolutionising the martial arts genre and influencing the works of directors like Tsui Hark (Swordsman II) , Ang Lee (Couching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and John Carpenter (Big Trouble in Little China).

Pal Anders Jorgen Hollender is a Swedish film director and performance artist.
Hollender is known foremost for his controversial documentaries. Pelle polis (Pelle the Policeman) (1998) that dealt with issues of power and pederasty (with autobiographical remarks) was denied airing on TVs. His 2001 documentary Buy Bye Beauty about the Swedish interference in Latvian sex industry, which included himself engaging in sexual intercourse with several prostitutes in Riga, was condemned by Latvian authorities for its contents and allegations about the proliferation of the country's sex industry following its independence.
Hollender became known through his participation in the 1998 edition of the reality show Expedition Robinson on SVT, he also participated in the 2003 edition. He has also been in television shows like Kanal 5's comedy series Grattis Varlden! that featured Filip & Fredrik.

John Herbert Dillinger was probably the most violent of the world infamous Depression era American gangsters, trumping the likes of Bonnie and Clyde and even his own sordid associates including but not limited to Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson. The Daughter of Dawn (1920) Blu-Ray

The Daughter of Dawn is unique in a number of ways. Made in 1920, it was never commercially released, and believed lost until a print was discovered in 2005. It was finally released in 2012, ninety-eight years after it was made, which has to be the longest period ever between completion of filming and release date. The Daughter of Dawn also features no white characters at all, and the entire cast is made up of Kiowa and Commanche Indians.
There is a conflicted love story centered around the Daughter of Dawn (a Kiowa woman named Esther Lebarre), who is the daughter of the Kiowa chief (played by a non-actor named Hunting Horse). She is in love with a warrior named White Eagle, played by White Parker, who was the real-life son of Quanah Parker, the chief of the Comanche tribe. Conflict arises when another man vies for the attention of the Daughter of Dawn. Jealousy, betrayal, great feats of courage, a Comanche attack, and a huge bison hunt follow on the path to the requisite happy ending.

The military coup led to a dictatorship whose rule over Brazil lasted until 1985. Pereira escaped censorship during these years partly by shifting further toward allegory. In Azyllo Muito Louco (1970), set in an asylum, Santo's used Machado de Assis' 1898 novel "O Alienista" as the basis to create an allegorical commentary on Brazilian political history.

The story concerns a priest/psychiatrist who convinces the powers-that-be in a small Brazilian town that the mental health of its citizens must be attended to-then keeps changing the criteria for admission to his hospital so that, in the end, all are candidates for the loony bin.
